2012 NFL Free Agents: Green Bay Packers Sign Jermichael Finley to 2-Year Deal

Gabe ZaldivarFeb 22, 2012

The Green Bay Packers managed to get better by staying the same. Jermichael Finley will continue to be a big part of the Packers with a new two-year deal.

NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk reported via their Twitter feed that the star tight end had indeed agreed to a two-year contract with the only NFL team he has known.

"

"Per league source, Packers agree to terms on two-year contract with TE Jermichael Finley.Details coming at PFT."

This should come to great applause from Packers fans who would have hated to see an amazing talent like Finley suit up for another team.

This is a big tight end who plays like a wide receiver. He has the talent and form to continue his label as one of the best at the position for the next few years.

This deal comes after a drawn-out contract dispute on the very issue of where Finley fits in: as a receiver or tight end. For now, that battle is at rest, and the Packers have their man once again.

NBC Sports' Mike Florio reports on the deal which, he states, is worth just under $15 million. He also adds that the deal's average sits at $7.5 million:

"

"(The Deal) roughly splits the difference between the tight end franchise tender of $5.4 million and the receiver franchise tender of $9.4 million.  And it gives Finley another crack at the open market in 2014."

"

You immediately have to question the production of Finley, which is not at an elite level—especially when you have Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham bringing in more than 1,300 yards each at the tight end position.

Meanwhile, Finley has had roughly half that at 767, but that is not what matters.

When you see Finley play and command the field with his size, you realize that he is truly something special and a player who is ready to break out.

The fact that he has a quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, who gets every last receiver involved in the game, doesn't help his numbers either.

Finley has the talent to be the best tight end in the business. This deal makes it near certain he shows that while wearing a Packers uniform.
