Player Whose Stock Will Rise: DL Michael Brockers, LSU
Few players who will be participating at the combine are as athletically gifted as LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers. At 6'6" and 306 lbs., Brockers has ideal size to dominate as a 4-3 tackle or 3-4 end at the next level.
Size isn't the only thing that Brockers brings to the table, though, as his quickness and agility at the position is likely unmatched. According to Draft Countdown, Brockers has a recorded 40-yard dash time of 4.95 seconds, which is impeccable for his size.
A lot of the drills at the combine are based on speed and explosiveness so it would almost be impossible for Brockers not to stand out. He should also excel in the strength drills, though, making him one of the more complete prospects available.
Brockers is currently projected by most to go in the mid- to late first round, but a dominant combine could easily push him near the top 10 and in contention with Penn State's Devon Still as the draft's top defensive tackle.
Player Whose Stock Will Fall: LB Luke Kuechly, Boston College
In terms of production at the collegiate level, Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly may have an advantage on everyone. In three season Kuechly never had less than 158 tackles over the course of a year, and he racked up an incredible 191 stops this past season, along with three interceptions. As good of an in-game player as Kuechly is, though, his skills may not translate well to the combine setting.
Obviously, the 40 time isn't the be-all, end-all for Kuechly, but Draft Countdown lists him at a mediocre 4.8 seconds. There are some defensive linemen who run a faster 40 than that, so Kuechly is unlikely to wow the scouts in that regard.
Kuechly's best attributes as a player are his motor, his instincts and his ability to diagnose plays. I expect him to be an excellent middle linebacker at the next level, but his combine performance isn't likely to do him any favors in terms of draft position, though.
