Knicks Trade Rumors: Jeremy Lin's Emergence Shouldn't Stop Knicks from Adding PG

Tim DanielsFeb 10, 2012

Jeremy Lin has taken New York City by storm with his awe-inspiring play since entering the Knicks starting lineup, but that shouldn't stop the team from researching more options at the position before the trade deadline.

Chris Broussard of ESPN reported on Monday that the Knicks were scouting Houston Rockets point man Jonny Flynn:

"

The New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers have contacted the Houston Rockets about acquiring Jonny Flynn, according to league sources.

No deal is imminent with either team, but both clubs are in desperate need of a point guard and have Flynn on their radar.

Whether it's Flynn or another backup point guard, the Knicks must add some depth at the position before the deadline passes. Baron Davis clearly doesn't have much left in the tank, and there's still no concrete timetable for his return from a variety of ailments.

Lin has done an awesome job of filling the void over the past week, averaging 25 points and eight assists per game. While he has certainly looked like the real deal, the Knicks can't buy in completely quite yet and risk getting burned if he turns out to be a flash in the pan.

There have been numerous players in the past who have had breakout weeks only to fade in to the background in a heartbeat. New York can't be blinded by a couple strong games.

The Knicks have too much talent to be sitting where they are right now, which is on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. So the front office needs to do everything within its power to ensure the roster is well prepared for a second-half run after the All-Star break.

That's a lot of pressure on interim general manager Glen Grunwald, but if the team's play doesn't improve soon, the fans will start getting restless. Getting a reliable backup point guard would be a good start to keeping them happy just in case Linsanity ends abruptly.
