WWE: Comparing Super Bowl Commercials to WWE Superstars

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

Super Bowl commercials are just as memorable as the game itself. Last night's 30-second spots may have seemed lackluster on the whole, but it is what companies use to appeal to millions of people at the same time. In a way, it kind of reminds me of WWE and the superstars that they show. WWE exposes fans to different superstars and, while only some of them make a positive impression, they all seem to be remembered in one way or another.

I tried, after last night, to put together a list of some of the more memorable commercials from last night and compare them to WWE superstars. There might be a character that reminds me of a superstar or it may be the overall reaction from the commercial itself that brings someone to mind. Either way, a commercial, like a WWE superstar, has a very short time period to try and make a grand impression. Some fall on their face and others are remembered forever.

Let's do some aligning of some Super Bowl commercials to the WWE roster.

Budweiser: Eternal Optimism

1 of 20

This Budweiser commercial focuses around how the beer has always been there through the good times over the decades. From wars being over to man landing on the moon, Budweiser has always been around to make a big party of it. This one seemed a little more serious than the Budweiser frogs we have seen historically from the company in these spots. I would have expected that, if they were going back in history, it would be those spots that would be in a montage.

When I think about this commercial, it was difficult to peg it to somebody specifically. I then kept watching it over and over. It was interesting and cool at first, but just got more and more boring as time went along. It seemed unique at first, but just ended up turning bland quickly. That's when it reminded me of someone's career: Alberto Del Rio.

Del Rio accomplished so much in his short stint in WWE that it feels like he has been around for years. When you then look at his gimmick and his reaction over time, it gets to be like this commercial. The reaction is great at first and people are on board, but as time goes on, it's kind of the same thing.

WWE Superstar: Alberto Del Rio

Hyundai: Think Fast

2 of 20

This one was pretty easy for me. A young man is driving his old boss in a Hyundai and seems to keel over. With his quick thinking, the young driver brakes and accelerates quickly a few times, which is practically bringing the man back to life.

Now, view this commercial once again, but turn the young driver into Cody Rhodes, the rising star who has sold a lot of people on his usefulness in the company. While some wanted him gone years earlier, Cody stuck it out and is about as impressive as they come in WWE today.

As for the old guy in the passenger seat, you can have fun with this. It can be his career that many thought would be dead. It could be the company itself being represented due to Rhodes making it interesting again. It could even be my personal favorite: the Intercontinental Championship.

WWE Superstar: Cody Rhodes

Chevy Sonic: Stunt Anthem

3 of 20

Chevy rolled out a few Super Bowl commercials with one of them being for their new Sonic model. To show it off, they had the car perform a few interesting stunts that you don't normally see in a car commercial. It stuck out, but did it make much of an impact?

This all just seems like a high-flyer, mainly a guy like Evan Bourne. Bourne has a unique offense in the ring and does all these crazy stunts. Does it make him stand out? Not really. It may give him some second glances, but nothing more than that. The truth is that, no matter how many times he tries, Bourne is only as special as his crazy moves, which won't get you very far. The stunts performed look cool, but some make you wonder why the heck it is necessary that they get done that way.

Also, the Sonic model looks lame and could be sent packing pretty soon. Sound familiar, Mr. Wellness Policy violator?

Toyota Camry: It's Reinvented

4 of 20

Toyota reinvents one thing in the Camry and feels the need to tell us what else can be reinvented? No thank you. Just because it worked once doesn't mean it will work with everything else.

This is right up the alley with Zack Ryder. The social media superstar made it big thanks to his cult following and his YouTube channel. After hard work finding a new way to make it, many others tried to get in on the action. From Curt Hawkins to Tyler Reks and so many others in between, Ryder's way of making it has tried to be duplicated by other WWE superstars. The fact is that it was a new way to make it and not the best way. Ryder now seems to be losing steam as many fans are feeling like he sold out.

WWE Superstar: Zack Ryder

Doritos: Sling Baby

5 of 20

Doritos rolls out this commercial of a baby and his grandmother watching a kid with a bag of Doritos. The kid is mocking the other two from atop a slide and, when the old lady launches the baby toward the kid and the Doritos, the bag of chips gets taken away shockingly.

Let's make the baby into the All-American American, Jack Swagger. Make all the old jokes you want about the grandmother being Vickie Guerrero, but that isn't the point. The point is that Zack Ryder is the young kid on the slide with the chips, which could be the United States Championship. Riding high, it seems like nobody really cares that he has the chips anymore. Swagger gets launched, or pushed, to the chips and snatches them away. Now is the perfect time for Ryder...I mean the kid to go down the slide or fall down, if you will.

WWE Superstar: Jack Swagger

Volkswagen: The Dog Strikes Back

6 of 20

Volkswagen came out with this commercial about a fat dog. The dog notices the Volkswagen outside and wants to chase it, but can't make it through the doggy hole in the door. I won't mention the irony of a fat anything having a desire to run, but rather just cut to the chase. The dog starts to lose weight and slims down to be able to fit through the door and chase the Volkswagen.

It's a nice story of losing weight to stay healthy and being rewarded for it. It kind of reminds me of the story of Mark Henry from last year. Following being drafted to SmackDown, The World's Strongest Man was emotional about a new start to his career by having lost weight and feeling great about himself. We know that Henry made his world championship dream a reality and, even with injuries, looks like one of the toughest men in WWE today.

If this commercial keeps with the scenario, that dog is going to destroy that car.

WWE Superstar: Mark Henry

Samsung: This Thing Called Love

7 of 20

Samsung takes technology that has been around for years and brings back a musical artist society hasn't heard from in years to make a successful ad. People wait in line for a new phone in the beginning of the commercial and seem depressed at the idea of it. The ad is for the Samsung Galaxy Note, which is a smartphone that features...wait for it...a pen! It's such a groundbreaking idea that was used with the original PDAs.

Just then, Justin Hawkins comes in and sings the only song most people have ever heard him sing. Who is Justin Hawkins, you ask? Without relation to Curt Hawkins, Justin is the lead singer of The Darkness, responsible for "I Believe In A Thing Called Love", the 2003 hit from The Darkness. Somehow, an old idea for a phone and an old song makes something fresh and new with Super Bowl ads.

This is very similar to Brodus Clay, who has taken the time-honored tradition of a funky gimmick, mixed it with music used previously by other funky gimmicks and somehow made it his own. Clay's momentum will last as long as this commercial's does. Eventually, we will get sick of both and want to move on.

WWE Superstar: Brodus Clay

GoDaddy: The Cloud

8 of 20

It's a GoDaddy commercial, so we know the basic gist of this. There are guys who are checking out GoDaddy, there is a cut to some ridiculous fantasy, there's a hot girl that is usually Danica Patrick and there's an apparent payoff at the end. Just then, we are told to go to the website to see more of the ad. For years now, it has been the same routine for GoDaddy and it always leads to some mild humor in the form of a sexual pun.

For many wrestling fans, this is the exact same story with John Cena, minus the sexual puns. Cena's act has grown old on many fans over the years, coming to a head now with his storyline against Kane. Cena is now just weeks away from his WrestleMania showdown with The Rock. Fans of the Super Bowl commercials, at least the perverted ones who want to see pornographic commercials, keep wishing that GoDaddy will finally be bad enough to actually show what they allude. For GoDaddy, that would be their version of a John Cena heel turn.

WWE Superstar: John Cena

Skechers: Go Run Mr. Quiggly

9 of 20

In one of the more popular spots of the night, Skechers promoted their new Go Run sneakers with a French bulldog named Mr. Quiggley. In a dog race, the little Mr. Quiggley would compete as a late entry and, despite his small stature and being behind the pack, Quiggley and his Skechers shoes would blaze a path to an upset victory.

It kind of sounds like the underdog story that has been Rey Mysterio's career. Am I calling Rey Mysterio a French bulldog in this analogy? Yes. It still doesn't take away from the fact that Mysterio has never been considered world champion material, but has proven time and time again that he is good enough. Also, I'm pretty sure he could do the moonwalk like Mr. Quiggley.

WWE Superstar: Rey Mysterio

Dannon Oikos: The Tease

10 of 20

Dannon's Greek yogurt named Oikos had a Super Bowl commercial as well. In this ad, John Stamos, a spokesman for the yogurt, is sitting at a table sharing the yogurt...or is he? The entire ad features Stamos stealing spoonfuls instead of giving any away. It is only when the woman fights back that Stamos doesn't get any of the yogurt.

The moral of the ad, at least in my mind initially, is that John Stamos is a greedy man who will do what it takes to keep others away from what he wants. This could probably fit the bill of a couple superstars, especially some in their real attitudes. However, this most reminds me of current world heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan.

Since becoming world champion, Bryan has pulled few punches in terms of keeping others away from obtaining what he believes is his. He also does all of this with a smile on his face to seem like a nice guy.

WWE Superstar: Daniel Bryan

Honda: Matthew's Day Off

11 of 20

Honda seemed to have busted the bank open for this year's commercial. For this ad, Honda took the revered story of Ferris Bueller and turned it into a bad ripoff. It's one thing to an homage to the classic Bueller character, but the ad changes just about everything from the original. It also isn't even Bueller doing the day off, but rather Matthew Broderick himself. So basically, Broderick is playing sick? Why?

If this was just a grown up Ferris Bueller, I could get on board. Nobody cares if Matthew Broderick wants to take a day off, especially with what he considers to be a fun day to fake illness. This is all the more reason that the comparison to WWE goes to Mick Foley. Don't get me wrong; I love Foley. Foley should be in the Hall of Fame already. However, his antics, like those in the Royal Rumble, are more suited as Mankind or Cactus Jack or even as Dude Love. Does anyone care as much about Mick Foley? That's like saying that you want to see Mark Calloway and not The Undertaker.

WWE Superstar: Mick Foley

Bud Light Platinum: The Factory

12 of 20

Bud Light debuted commercials for their new beer, called Bud Light Platinum. It's basically the same thing as regular Bud Light except that it comes in a blue bottle and contains six percent alcohol by volume. For the kids, that means it's stronger. So, a reliable product comes out with a new look and is stronger than ever? Hmmm...

Does this sound like Kane to anyone? After all, the look Kane has now isn't quite like anything he has had before. It may mirror his original run with the gimmick, but there is an unusual edge to Kane now that wasn't there before. There's also no doubting that Kane is stronger than ever before.

WWE Superstar: Kane

Bridgestone: Performance Basketballs

13 of 20

Bridgestone had some interesting commercials this year. The tire company used sports to show how great of a job their technology can be for the wheels of your car. This ad featured wrestling fanatic Michelle Beadle and basketballs made from Bridgestone rubber. Batista may believe that basketballs don't hold grudges, but what these balls hold is a lack of making noise.

There may be a case as to how this proved anything, or even the logic of not making basketball sneakers that don't squeak as much too. With that said, it was a cryptic commercial that seemed futuristic and said very little, especially with such silent basketballs.

That is Chris Jericho at this point. Jericho returned last month with few words and all energy. Since returning, he has made little indication into what he actually plans to accomplish. Maybe we will find out more from Jericho as we get pretty close to WrestleMania.

WWE Superstar: Chris Jericho

Century 21: Super Bowl Ad

14 of 20

Century 21 had a commercial this year for the Super Bowl to show how great their agents are. The female agent in this commercial played hardball better than Donald Trump, was flashier than Deion Sanders, as well as skated faster than Apolo Anton Ohno. This agent can do anything and do it better than anyone else. What a showoff...

Speaking of showoffs, it is Dolph Ziggler that this ad reminds me of. Ziggler has sort of veered off from being a Mr. Perfect ripoff and has turned into The Show-Off, his attempt at being his own impressive self. Ziggler has impressed for months now. On a few pay-per-views in the last few months, Ziggler has been booked into multiple matches at a time. Ziggler is one of the best workers today and it is hard to not root for this guy. He can't help it if he is so much better.

WWE Superstar: Dolph Ziggler

H&M: David Beckham Ad

15 of 20

David Beckham couldn't keep himself out of the Super Bowl, appearing in an H&M commercial. I guess this was done to promote Beckham's underwear line, but it just seemed to focus around Beckham's tattooed body in skimpy shorts. Remind you of anyone?

It basically reminded me of Randy Orton's look and demeanor. Women swoon for both men and are fascinated with their bodies. To be honest, at times, it seems like the tattoos are the brightest aspects of either man's personality. Orton is the David Beckham of the WWE. That's not really much of a stretch to say.

WWE Superstar: Randy Orton

Coke: Arghh

16 of 20

It's a pretty simple commercial from Coke. Two iconic Coke polar bears are sitting down watching the game. One of the bears leaves the room for a minute and yells out his frustrations. It was basic, but effective. Here we are talking about it after the fact.

However, all I could muster out of the ad was the big groan. It made me think of one man: The Great Khali. Before you keep scratching your heads, hear me out. Both the bear and Khali are big and yell big. That moan is about as audible as Khali can get honestly. Perhaps that is what Khali was doing during his tenure away from the WWE. Yes, I just suggested that Khali went to the Arctic, yelled and returned. He walks slow enough that the logistics are there.

That moan was also what many fans were doing once they found out that Khali was in the Elimination Chamber match at the next pay-per-view.

WWE Superstar: The Great Khali

Acura: Transactions

17 of 20

Jerry Seinfeld returns to Super Bowl ads this year with his Acura ad. In the ad, Seinfeld tries desperately to become the first owner of the new Acura model. Seinfeld goes to great lengths, such as bringing in the Soup Nazi, finding a living Munchkin, bringing the guy onto a high-speed boat and various other things. In the end, Seinfeld is nearly successful until Jay Leno swoops in with a better offer and gets the car.

This ad didn't do it for me. It was a guy that was cracking jokes and just wasn't funny, while losing to Leno in the long run, who is just as unfunny. I could have done without seeing this guy again, reminding me of how I felt when Jerry Lawler got back into the ring.

I understand that both are still better than others in their professions, but enough is enough. Seinfeld should just live off the prestige of his sitcom without destroying his legacy. Lawler is a Hall of Famer that doesn't know when to stop wrestling. When you retire from the ring, you go to commentary to stay fresh. Lawler has gone stale in both fields, but keeps performing in both. Give it up, the both of you.

WWE Superstar: Jerry Lawler

M&Ms: Just My Shell

18 of 20

What I believe to be the funniest commercial of the night was from M&Ms, where they debuted the brown female M&M. It was implied that she was not nude, but rather just a brown M&M. However, the red M&M didn't see it that way and broke out of his shell (literally) to dance to some LMFAO. It was funny for sure and just showed how idiotic the red guy really is.

So who would be as stupid as that red M&M? If you watch NXT, which you probably don't, this honor could go to Johnny Curtis. Curtis won a season of NXT, but didn't do nearly anything with that victory, falling back onto the show in an awkward supporting role. His character has always been labeled as a pretty stupid one. His awful puns in his vignettes made nobody look forward to his debut on SmackDown. Now, he gets watched by few people weekly on NXT.

Then again, maybe I am the idiot for watch NXT in the first place...

WWE Superstar: Johnny Curtis

Chevy: Happy Grad

19 of 20

Yet another stupid person shines in this Chevrolet commercial. Instead of seeing that he has been given a mini fridge, the happy graduate thinks he has been given a new Chevy. His emotions get the best of him and he even proposes to his girlfriend over the news. When the real owner of the car drives away with it, he wonders why his car was stolen.

How stupid do you have to be to think this way? Well, if you are Santino Marella, it isn't too far off. Couldn't you picture Santino reacting this way to something? Didn't we all see this reaction during last year's Royal Rumble when he thought he would win the match? This is Santino pretty much.

WWE Superstar: Santino Marella

Pepsi: King's Court

20 of 20

In this commercial from Pepsi, Elton John enjoys his Pepsi and only gives it to whomever he is impressed with. Melanie Amaro, the winner of X Factor, comes to sing for Pepsi and is granted some, despite Elton's initial thoughts on the matter. Amaro then finds a way to get rid of the king and enable everyone to have Pepsi.

Now, look at this commercial again from a wrestling aspect. Imagine the king to be WWE brass, being impressed by talent, only to deny them in the long run. Suddenly, CM Punk comes along, impresses and gets his chance to shine. However, he doesn't do it just for himself, but for the others that deserve it. Punk's chance over the summer helped guys like Daniel Bryan and Zack Ryder in the fall and winter.

WWE Superstar: CM Punk
