2012 NFL Free Agents: Matt Flynn and Best Available Players

Jun 6, 2018

With the 2012 NFL offseason just days from kicking off, the Super Bowl buzz cannot avert our eyes for long from the possible free agent pool this season.

While players like Peyton Manning and Matt Forte could be free agents, I kept this to players who are certainly going to hit the open market this offseason.

All of the following players are dominant at their positions and would be great pickups for any and every NFL team.

Matt Flynn

While there isn’t a huge body of work to analyze Matt Flynn, his one start this season had the whole NFL world talking.

With the Green Bay Packers comfortably in the playoffs and the Detroit Lions fighting for a better seed, Flynn was thrown into the starting lineup as the Packers rested most of their starters.

Flynn took advantage of the opportunity by throwing for 480 yards and six touchdowns. That was enough to make teams looking for a quarterback think Flynn is the next Rodgers, but I see more Kevin Kolb.

Peyton Hillis

Despite being cursed by a video game, Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis did everything in his power to lower his free-agent stock this season. Hillis will find a home no matter what and dominate once again.

While the combination of injuries, trade rumors and a lack of concentration plagued the powerful back all season, fewer spotlights on Hillis will be the best thing for his psyche and his running abilities.

There is almost no doubt that the Browns will let Hillis walk after the season he had last year and the attitude he displayed. That’s the best scenario for the bruiser because he needs to run behind a better offensive line than the one they have in Cleveland.

DeSean Jackson

While the Philadelphia Eagles will make an attempt to keep the Pro Bowl wide receiver, DeSean Jackson hurt his big money chances with a poor effort in 2011.

Jackson has had just 105 catches over the last two seasons and is not worth the money he is asking for. After mailing in effort at several points of last season, head coach Andy Reid was forced to bench the young star in order to wake him up mentally.

As much as Jackson responded to the coach’s technique, the damage was already done. While he may not be returning to Philadelphia, there are a few teams that have quarterbacks with big arms that would die for a deep threat like DeSean.
