Vic Fangio is being overlooked.

The defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers has not been interviewed for any of the head coaching jobs that open right now. In fact, his name barely comes up in any of the news reports and countless articles.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh gets a ton of credit for turning the 49ers around and he should. However, Fangio should get more credit for the work that he's done with the defensive unit. They were already loaded with talent, but he was able to take them from "good" to "great" in a matter of a season.

The numbers speak for themselves.

The 49ers rank near the top for most of the important defensive categories out there. Guys like Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman, Carlos Rogers and Dashon Goldson are familiar names with fans around the league now. This unit is one of the biggest reasons why there's an NFC Championship Game being played in the Bay Area this weekend.

Yet, Fangio remains in the background.

Most 49ers fans will agree that it's a good thing that Fangio isn't being distracted by the head coaching chase. It means that he has more time to focus on the game plan to stop Eli Manning and the New York Giants. However, as fans, we also want to see rewards being handed out to those that have served the team well.

Fangio has never been a head coach before in his career. With the year that his defense has been having, many figured it would be the first time that he gets a sniff at it.
