Ohio State Football: What New Coaching Staff's Words Can Mean for 2012 Buckeyes
Urban Meyer has now fully introduced his coaching staff to Ohio State, which includes former North Carolina defensive coordinator Everett Withers, Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Herman and Notre Dame OL coach Ed Warriner.
A few days ago, the new staff had their chance to speak in front of the media for the first time as a collective unit and had some interesting thoughts to share.
When it comes to the offensive coaches, some of the thoughts they shared were simply a breath of fresh air to the beleaguered Buckeyes fans.
For years, they have had to deal with bland, predictable offenses from coaches Jim Bollman, Dick Tressel and Nick Siciliano.
Warriner and Herman, who will each share the offensive coordinator title, each talked about having a power element in the running game instead of the finesse look that most spread offenses try to incorporate.
The Buckeyes plan to move into a spread offense starting this season. However, to what percentage of plays they will operate out of the old school I-formation certainly can be higher than expected.
Meyer has talked before about keeping some of the traditional looks that Ohio State has used for decades.
However, when it comes to Herman—who put together great offenses at Rice before moving up to Iowa State—he said his offensive philosophy is about creating space for his playmakers and exploiting mismatches.
That's very much a far cry from the previous offensive regime, which was about conservatism and semi-predictability.
Warriner, who came to Ohio State as a highly-touted line coach, talked about having a physical line and one that can protect the passer.
In the past, under Bollman, Ohio State's offensive line has done neither very well, especially this year.
The Buckeyes line has given up dozens of sacks in the past two or three years, and the physicality of the unit has really come into question.
We will have to wait a few months to finally pull back the curtain on what these two coaches, among others, have planned for their Ohio State offensive overhaul, which has been long, long overdue.
Right now, new strength coach Mickey Marotti has already started to put the players through an aggressive strength program. Some players have already tweeted about its intensity.
Again, the spring game is months away, which means we will not get much more than a few pictures at most about what the Buckeyes offense might look like.
The defense should be just fine under the leadership of Withers and Luke Fickell.
The offense, on the other hand, is the bigger question mark. However, with promising young coaches on the staff, good things sound like they could be on the horizon.
