Week 17 was a do-or-die game for the Dallas Cowboys where they simply died. During the first half, the offensive was stymied by a relentless defensive line, and the defense was embarrassed by an efficient passing attack from Eli Manning.

The first-half deficit was simply too much for the Cowboys to overcome despite an effective and rather impressive second-half showing. Although there is always next season for another opportunity to make the playoffs, there are five players that I'm betting will never suit up for America’s Team again.

1. Terence Newman

Old. Washed up. Overrated. Pathetic. Overplayed. Overpaid. Underachieving. In likely his worst performance of his mediocre career, Terence Newman was repeatedly embarrassed by the Giants.

The quick receivers ran by him, the tight ends jumped over him and his teammates replaced him in the starting lineup. He will forever be remembered by Dallas fans for this final pitiful performance.

2. Bradie James and Keith Brooking

This middle linebacker tandem played well in Dallas for years, and was rightfully considered the heart and soul of the team. Things have changed however, and the new wave of talent has entered the defense with superstar Sean Lee, and an emerging Bruce Carter.

The days of an aging set of MLBs in Dallas is officially over as both of these veterans are shown the door.

3. Anthony Spencer

His potential has taken him thus far, and arguably is the reason why he still starts on the defense. If it was not for the constant double-team on DeMarcus Ware’s side, Anthony Spencer would not even be half as effective as he is.

As Spencer’s contract comes to an end, it would be foolish to overpay him and to keep him with the team. Potential only takes you so far.

4. Marty B.

When you need a YouTube video, he is your man. When you need to throw a party, he is your man. When you need a third-down conversion or a crucial block, he is absolutely not your man.

Martellus Bennett is one of the most talented useless football players in the league. He reminds me of Roy Williams at times because of his freakish athleticism, impressive catching ability and complete lack of production on the field.

5. Backup Safeties

These days, Gerald Sensabaugh, Abram Elam, Alan Ball and Barry Church split safety duties. For the most part, Sensabaugh and Elam start, while Ball and Church come in during nickel formations. Although I do not think Sensabaugh and Elam will go, it is crucial that the backups all leave the team.

In order for the current set of starters to get their acts together, there needs to be an infusion of young talent from the NFL draft. Something very similar to Sean Lee coming into to ignite Brooking and James. Dallas must upgrade the safety position and find a way to become more effective against the pass.
