James Posey is the type of veteran NBA player whose defensive and leadership abilities can greatly help a championship contender. Since he's been cut by the Indiana Pacers, there are a number of teams that should sign him.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the NBA Finals contenders that need someone like Posey who can help an inexperienced team understand the hardship and sacrifices you must make to become champions.
Let's look at three teams who need to sign James Posey.
Who needs Posey more?
The New York Knicks have a good amount of defensive ability in the paint with center Tyson Chandler and power forward Amare Stoudemire, but on the perimeter they do need some defensive help.
James Posey still has the ability to defend and shut down top perimeter scorers and if he could fill that role for the Knicks then Carmelo Anthony would not have to work as hard on defense.
Posey would also give championship experience to a Knicks roster that includes very few players who have championship rings.
New York would be foolish not to consider signing Posey.
With Jeff Green out for the season because of heart surgery, the Celtics really need some depth at forward if they wish to compete for another NBA title.
Posey was on the Celtics team that won the 2008 NBA Finals over the Los Angeles Lakers, and the team refused to sign him to the rich contract he got from the New Orleans Hornets that offseason.
Posey knows a lot of the players in Boston, and would be a perfect fit on the team. He would give them strong perimeter defending and clutch outside shooting.
The Celtics need players who can give Paul Pierce and Ray Allen rest during games to keep them fresh, and Posey can do that for Boston.
3. Oklahoma City Thunder
Should OKC make a big push for Posey?
The Thunder are lacking players who have championship rings, and James Posey would do a great job of teaching the young and inexperienced Oklahoma City roster how hard they have to work to be champions.
Posey's good outside shooting would open driving lanes for Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, and of course his defensive abilities would help the Thunder guard the likes of Kobe Bryant in the Western Conference.
If the Thunder want to make the Finals, they need more veterans, and Posey is a perfect fit for Scott Brooks' team.
