Sources within Everton already believe that the youngster is set for Stamford Bridge this winter.
The gifted English international has attracted interest from Chelsea's rival clubs Manchester City and Tottenham, but it seems he has his eyes are set for West London.
Chelsea's midfield has not been very impressive this season with the exception of Juan Mata and Ramires. The lack of creativity has had a telling effect on the Blues' goal-scoring chances.
Moreover, with age taking its toll on Lampard, the lack of top-class creativity has been missed at times.
The pace, creativity and adaptability of Rodwell to play both at midfield and defense comfortably has drawn the attention of Villas-Boas and he has reportedly set his eyes on bringing the youngster to Stamford Bridge in January. With Oriol Romeu sealing his first team spot as the defensive midfielder it is likely Villas-Boas might use Rodwell in a role similar to Lampard. Rodwell, who is widely regarded as one of the future English legends, is blessed with lighting pace, loads of creativity with an eye for goal. He looks like the perfect replacement to Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard.
The 20-year-old midfielder has been an integral part of David Moyes' comparatively small squad this season. He is presently sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in training and shall not take the field until New Year, which means if the reports are true, young Rodwell might have played the last game for his childhood club.
It is unlikely that David Moyes would willfully part with a player of Rodwell's quality, but in light of the Toffees' poor financial conditions he might reconsider his decision if a lucrative bid comes for the highly rated youngster.
Everton are expected to cash-in on their prized asset by demanding anything in the region of £20 million. But Villas-Boas is so impressed by Rodwell's skills he is ready to spend big in order to bring the celebrated youngster to Stamford Bridge.
