Penn State Football: Baylor Coach Brian Norwood Would Be Good Fit for PSU
After the firing of legendary head coach Joe Paterno in the wake of the Penn State scandal, the Nittany Lions have been searching for the next man to lead the squad.
On Sunday, ESPN reported that Penn State contacted Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood.
And he would be a great fit for Penn State.
Not only does Norwood already have seven years experience at Penn State, coaching safeties while his son, Jordan Norwood, was a receiver at the school, but he also was a part of the Bears' resurgence this season and has been coaching since 1990, when he started out with Arizona.
Gone are the days of landing a coach of Urban Meyer's caliber.
But Norwood has the ability to make the next step at Penn State and become its head coach. He's been groomed enough (including under Paterno) and he's one of the better coaches Penn State has been connected to.
The interest for Norwood is evident in the fact that Hawaii has also reached out to him coming off a disappointing 6-7 season that saw Greg McMackin retire as head coach this month.
Sure, he has no head coaching experience, but he has enough experience in college football to be prepared to take over Penn State.
Norwood's possible tenure with Penn State would be a high pressure situation, given the high expectations for the football team and the gloom surrounding the university, but there's no doubt in my mind that he can handle it.
Penn State may not have gotten Meyer, but landing a coach like Norwood would be a step in the right direction.
