January Transfer Rumours: 8 Clubs That Most Need to Spend

0 of 9

As you set up your Christmas tree, European football clubs are frantically trying to set up potential transfers during the January transfer window.

Here are eight European clubs that most need to spend in order to rectify their seasons.

Is your club on the list?

If so, please comment below with your opinion.

Chelsea

Why Do Chelsea Need to Spend?

Nicolas Anelka has left, Alex will leave and Paulo Ferreira, Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou are on the outer looking in.

Assuming something catastrophic doesn't happen tonight against Manchester City, André Villas-Boas will still have a job and will (should) be given a chance to overhaul the squad in January.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Centre back.

David Luiz isn't good enough, and Branislav Ivanović is a better right back than centre back.

Plus, I would rather the Serbian play at right back than José Bosingwa.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

Borussia Mönchengladbach's no-nonsense centre back, Dante.

He's a beast of a defender, he's going to come cheap, he's tailor made for the Premier League and he could motivate Luiz to become a better defender (I know I'm stretching a bit with this reason).

I envision Luiz as a defensive midfielder, because he lacks the positional sense to play at centre back.

Inter Milan

Why Do Inter Milan Need to Spend?

As A.C. Milan and Juventus continue to grow, Inter Milan are regressing and will continue that way unless they bring in reinforcements.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Centre midfield.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

I was surprised Inter Milan didn't buy Arturo Vidal or Gökhan Inler.

With want-away Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo set on leaving, Inter Milan must buy him in January.

Villarreal

3 of 9

Why do Villarreal Need to Spend?

It's unfortunate to watch Juan Carlos Garrido manage the sinking submarines, because having qualified for the UEFA Champions League before being promptly bundled out in the group stages, Villarreal have been massively underperformed in La Liga.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Forward.

Star forward Giuseppe Rossi, who scored 32 goals last season, has torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

Werder Bremen forward Claudio Pizarro, who has been in excellent form with 12 goals in 14 games this season, has basically stated he'll leave for free next season.

"I have another year on my contract, which I will respect. I will try to play a good season. Then I'll look around for other opportunities."

I'm sure if Villarreal submit a €3-8 million bid, Werder Bremen will look to sell.

Wolfsburg

4 of 9

Why Do Wolfsburg Need to Spend?

Their defence is shocking and if they don't shape up, they will be relegated.

I thought Hamburg's defence was amateurish, but then I watched Wolfsburg and I was amazed at how inept they were.

They have the second-worst defence in the Bundesliga.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Centre back.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

It hasn't helped Felix Magath that Simon Kjær has been loaned out to Roma.

Alex is dreaming of a move to Juventus but says the Turin club won't buy him.

Wolfsburg should buy him because having handed in a transfer request, Alex is basically no longer a member of Chelsea FC.

Everton

5 of 9

Why Do Everton Need to Spend?

Everton need a forward who can score and right now, their top scorer is a rookie super sub—Apostolos Vellios.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Forward.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

Tromsø forward Mos Abdellaoue, on loan from Vålerenga, has shown a propensity to score goals.

22 goals in 32 games to be exact.

He's unlikely to cost more than £3 million.

Fiorentina

6 of 9

Why Do Fiorentina Need to Spend?

Riccardo Montolivo is intent to leave for free, and why continue to play a player who doesn't want to play for the club?

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Creative midfielder.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

Arsenal midfielder Tomáš Rosický, who has been blighted by injuries, is out of contract next year.

Florence could spark a renaissance for Rosický.

Bolton Wanderers

7 of 9

Why Do Bolton Wanderers Need to Spend?

Gary Cahill is a certainty to leave in January. With the club stuck dead last, they need a centre back.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

    Centre back.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

    Aston Villa's bench-warming Carlos Cuéllar.

Bolton have no leverage, Cuéllar's contract ends next year, he's hardly played and maybe he'd want some regular game time.

Wigan Athletic

8 of 9

Why Do Wigan Athletic Need to Spend?

    Simple. To survive.

Which Position Needs the Most Reinforcement?

They'll get anyone decent enough to help out and save the club from relegation.

    Who Is a Realistic Buy?

My pick would be Chori Castro, a good little impact player from Mallorca.

His contract runs out next year and he'll cost next to nothing. I'd be surprised if any club offered a substantial amount for him.
