Heisman Watch: Updated Heisman Odds After College Football Awards Night

Johnathan CaceDec 9, 2011

All of the major college football awards went out on Thursday night and many of the Heisman finalists won at least one award. LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu took home the Bednarik award given to the best defensive player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club.

His teammate and fellow cornerback Morris Claiborne actually won the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given to the most outstanding cornerback.

Alabama’s Trent Richardson was the recipient of the Doak Walker Award given to the nation’s top running back, beating out fellow Heisman finalist Montee Ball. Ball was the only finalist who didn’t win a national award.

Baylor’s Robert Griffin III and Stanford’s Andrew Luck dueled it out for the two national awards given to the nation’s top quarterback. Luck won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award while Griffin won the Davey O’Brien Award.

The two awards given to the nation’s best player other than the Heisman, the Walter Camp Award and the Maxwell Award, both went to Luck.

Does that mean he is the favorite to win the prestigious Heisman?

Not in the slightest.

Voters have been revealing their ballots all throughout the week and Griffin is far and away the man to beat. Betting on Bodog.com started with him as a 1/5 favorite meaning you would have to bet $5 to win $1.

As of noon on Friday, that number has quadrupled with the quarterback now an incredible 1/20 favorite. Richardson is in second with 9/2 odds—you would have to bet $2 to win $9—and Luck is in third with 11/2. Ball and Mathieu are way in the back with 75/1 and 150/1 odds, respectively.

If Vegas knows what its talking about, and it usually does, then the Heisman will be going to Robert Griffin III on Saturday.
