Albert Pujols to LAA Angels: Chicago Cubs Should Inquire About Mark Trumbo

Jeff ChaseDec 8, 2011

With Albert Pujols taking a 10-year, $250 million deal with the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim, many are wondering where teams like the Chicago Cubs will now turn to fill their hole at first base. There is always Prince Fielder, but perhaps the guy Pujols just replaced should be of interest to the Cubs.

That would be Mark Trumbo.

There is a chance Trumbo could find another spot in the field for the Angels, but with their addition of Pujols and the role of designated hitter being fulfilled by Bobby Abreu, Trumbo appears to be running out of options.

In 2011, Trumbo hit very well. Although he had a poor batting average of .254, he managed to hit 29 home runs, 31 doubles and accumulated 87 RBIs. This was all in his first full year in the majors, and from the look of things he is only moving up.

The Cubs need to add some power after losing third baseman Aramis Ramirez and first baseman Carlos Pena. Not many of the other options really present their need to fill their void at power, unless of course they decide to spend the big bucks on Fielder.

Trumbo would certainly cost the Cubs some prospects and perhaps a major league player, but they shouldn't give up anything of major value. Perhaps the Angels would be interested in taking combination of Marlon Byrd, Tyler Colvin and few other prospects not named Josh Vitters, Trey McNutt or Brett Jackson.

If Trumbo does become available—or if the Angels are at least willing to listen—the Cubs will need to jump on it fast. With Pujols gone, the St. Louis Cardinals have just entered the first baseman sweepstakes as well.
