John Cena, Decision Time: Do You Care What Roddy Piper Said?

Tony DolemiteNov 28, 2011

Raw was must-see television last night. On the opening segment, we got to see another edition of Piper's Pit with special guest John Cena. As expected, Piper plus Cena equaled entertainment. No doubt!

After it was all said and done, I got it. I got what Piper was trying to tell Cena. Really. I'm sure we all got it. It's the same old story: Cena getting booed more and more every week and not doing a damn thing about it except smiling and acting like it's fine because the fans are paying their hard-earned money to express their passion.

I'm glad Piper confronted Cena about this. Having a legend of Roddy Piper's caliber and reputation confront him was special and conveyed just how serious the situation with Cena is.

This is possibly the start of something big happening with Cena. I don't want to say it's the start of the heel-turn everyone has been anticipating. It could be anything. Whatever it is, WWE needs to take this storyline and see it through. They need to build the momentum needed going into WrestleMania. But I digress.

Reality check is right, Hot Rod! Cena continues to be the face of the company in more ways than one. That means more than being just the good guy or WWE Champion. It means that you're the go-to guy. You're the one that the company is depending on to carry the ball. The one who works with charitable organizations for children on behalf of the company. The goodwill ambassador who will always do the right thing.

Cena has done a great job in that respect, better than many of his predecessors before him. Again, I am a staunch supporter of Cena and more than willing to stand by him. But there are some kinks that still need to be worked out.

What kind of a world are we living in, when you, as the biggest star in the business—a business, mind you, that relies on passion, good or bad—simply doesn't react to the fans? How is that okay?

That's the impression I get from Cena: Everything is fine as is. There's no need to switch things up a bit at all.

Well, John, I have news for you: It's not okay. It's absurd! Your career took off in the first place because you connected with the fans. Somehow, for some reason, you have lost sight of that. You have lost sight as to what really matters. The fans demand a lot; smiling and waving just isn't going to cut it.

Coasting on past laurels is beneath you. You have to do more than Rise Above the Hate. You have to confront the hate and the harsh realities that come with it before it's too late. Or is it already?
