Ndamukong Suh: Apology Won't Keep NFL from Kicking Suh with Suspension

Eric BallNov 28, 2011

The damage has been done. Ndamukong Suh, stop trying to put a Band-Aid on it.

The Detroit Lions' ferocious defensive end stomped Green Bay Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith on Thanksgiving Day with the entire NFL world watching. He was promptly ejected from the game and was oddly unapologetic. He barely acknowledged any wrongdoing and said God was on his side:

"

People are going to have their own opinions -- that's fine. The only (people) that I really care about are my teammates, my true fans and my coaches and their opinions, and that's where it lies. And honestly, the most important person in this whole thing that I have to deal with is the man upstairs.

Does the man upstairs approve of head stomping?

The backlash has been harsh, and Suh decided to patch up this sticky situation by calling league commissioner Roger Goodell on Sunday night to apologize, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Wanna bet that his agents and sponsors forced him to do this?

It is an obvious PR move in a desperate attempt to knock the suspension down to one game. Right now, there are multiple reports predicting at least a two-game ban for the second-year pro out of Nebraska. He will also face a heavy fine and anger management classes.

The only other precedent in the Goodell era is when Albert Haynesworth stomped on a helmet-less Andre Gurode and received a five-game ban.

I doubt he gets that big of a penalty because the victim was actually wearing a helmet, but you’d assume his lack of remorse is going to cost him as well. He already took the time to visit Goodell once this season regarding the rules, and things have only gotten worse.

Suh is quickly earning the dreaded “dirty player” rep, and sucking up in a meaningless phone call isn’t going to change that. Suh has a bright future in the NFL, but he has a huge issue that needs to be fixed right away. Maybe anger management classes and a two-game ban will be the remedy.

If not, it will be Goodell making the phone call to tell him he is in danger of being kicked out of the league.
