Wrestlemania 28 may contain Chris Jericho vs CM Punk according to some rumored plans for the PPV. It may even be for the WWE championship. But will the match alone make Wrestlemania 28 a success?
Is it even guaranteed to happen?
Let's say it does happen and CM Punk goes one-on-one against Chris Jericho. Will the match help make Wrestlemania 28 a successful PPV though?
Yes and no.
Yes, because it'll be one of the more anticipated bouts. No, because it'll be one of the more anticipated bouts.
See, here's the thing.
Wrestlemania 28 is being highlighted by John Cena vs The Rock. Not Jericho vs Punk, Taker vs Hunter, or the eventual showdown for the World Heavyweight championship most likely involving Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton.
It's all being highlighted as John Cena vs The Rock. Nothing more, nothing less.
And this is why I think Chris Jericho vs CM Punk will not help make Wrestlemania 28 a successful PPV, whether it'll be for the WWE championship or not.
The show is basically depending on Rock vs Cena to help increase the buyrates. The rest of the matchcard is there as a bonus.
So why won't Jericho/Punk help if it's one of the more anticipated bouts?
Ask the casual fan. They'll give you the answer.
"We want to see Cena vs Rock."
"Who cares about Jericho? The man doesn't talk."
"Punk? Why, I, consider him the champion but what's with all the hype surrounding him?"
For you see, Punk vs Jericho is the IWC's "wet dream match." Ask anyone, they want to see it more than anything, even more so than Cena vs Rock.
This anticipation by those who thrive on viewing the art of wrestling more than hype, is what will make Wrestlemania 28 a successful show. In the eyes of the IWC, Chris Jericho vs CM Punk will make it a success. A bout between the two who are "the best in the world" will instantly make the show great.
The rest is just icing on the cake.
So yes, the possible Jericho vs Punk match will make Wrestlemania 28 a successful show, but only to the analytical pro wrestling fan and not to the casual fan.
To the casual viewer, the show is all about John Cena vs The Rock.
The hype has been there for about a year and it is what they want to see.
"The Great One" versus "The Champ."
Team Bring It (Via Satellite) versus The CeNation (Team Fruity Pebbles).
That's their main event and what will make their decision on the show a success. It'll be the anticipated bout of the night that determines how they'll feel overall about the show.
To the IWC, though, it'll help the decision be more clear but the rest of the card will also factor into it.
Jericho vs Punk though may be the X factor. The IWC wants to see it, and if it fails to live up to expectations, it will surely kill their mood about the whole night. Thus, we'll see tons of hate reviews about the show and an ambush of disappointing articles.
Punk vs Jericho will make the show a success, but only to those who like the art of wrestling more than entertainment.
Otherwise though, Rock vs Cena is the match that will make Wrestlemania 28 a success.
