Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Why Pac-Man Must Fear Pretty Boy

Luis BatlleNov 25, 2011

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have had talks of meeting up for a fight for the ages, and still no fight has been announced. Yet for the sake of Pacquiao, not having a fight against "Pretty Boy" Mayweather is the the best move.

According to Black Sports Online, negotiations between the two sides are taking place and he is ready for a fight with Mayweather.

Pacquiao had the following to say in regards to a future match:

"

Negotiations are ongoing for my fight with Mayweather, but nothing is final. Mayweather may be thinking, I can fight Pacquiao now because he had trouble against Marquez, and I was able to beat up Marquez. This is what boxing fans are waiting for.

"

Despite the negotiations, Pacquiao is simply not ready for a fight of this magnitude.

For one, Pacquiao comes off a fight to forget, as he was barely able to edge out Juan Manuel Marquez in a fight that he showed both fatigue and an inability to dominate the fight. Granted, Marquez is a worthy, accomplished fighter, he is no Pacquiao and yet was able to get the best of him in the ring.

Pacquiao's last five matches have come down to decisions, as he has been unable to get the TKOs or KOs that he, once upon time, would earn regularly.

In the Marquez fight there was a big fatigue issue with Pacquiao. He was out-boxed in the final rounds and put to the test. There were plenty around the sport who felt as though Marquez in fact had the better performance. Pacquiao was able to land just 30 percent of his punches and 19 percent of his jabs, with Marquez landing 32 and 21 percent, respectively.

Considering that Pac-Man is coming off arguably one of his worst fights of late, undoubtedly a fight against Mayweather is asking for trouble, as the momentum and strong level of boxing is certainly not there for the Filipino-sensation.

The other significant factor is the fact that Pac-Man's promoter, Bob Arum, continues to keep Pacquiao from fighting Mayweather. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com the following: "We have been informed that Bob Arum is not interested in pursuing a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at this time."

The fact that Arum continues to shy away from a potential megafight between the two well-respected boxers makes it all the more evident Pac-Man isn't and will never be ready for a showdown with Mayweather. Although, in fact, there are sources supporting ongoing negotations at the time.

Make no mistake about it, Pacquiao is one of the stronger boxers to grace the sport as of late.

Yet, based on his recent performances and Arum's claims, Pac-Man isn't ready for Pretty Boy. The undefeated, 42-0 Mayweather has Pacquiao afraid of tarnishing his reputation as one of the greater boxers in the sport.
