LSU vs Arkansas: Why LSU Is on Its Way to the Most Impressive Season in History

Randy ChambersNov 23, 2011

Everybody has their own opinion on which team is the greatest team in the history of college football.

Some would say the 1986 Miami Hurricanes, who had a Heisman winner in Vinny Testaverde and went undefeated before losing the Fiesta Bowl to Penn State. Many consider that team to be the most perfect team in the history of the game from top to bottom.

What about the 2005 USC Trojans, who had two Heisman winners in quarterback Matt Leinart and running back Reggie Bush? That team also went undefeated before losing the National Championship to Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns in the final seconds.

You could also say the 1983 Nebraska Cornhuskers. That team was nearly unstoppable, averaging 50 points a game and only giving up 16. But like every other team on this list, they ended up losing the last game of the season against Miami in the Orange Bowl.

Sure, you could mention tons of other teams, as there have been some great seasons in the long history of this sport.

But if the Tigers continue to run the table this year, they will have put together the greatest season in college football history.

Just think about how this season started, with starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson being suspended indefinitely for getting involved in a bar fight. LSU had to rely on senior quarterback Jarrett Lee, who had little experience before this season to carry them on short notice.

All that happened was a 40-27 victory over the highly ranked Oregon Ducks Week 1.

After destroying Northwestern State, the Tigers went on the road to beat Mississippi State and West Virginia back-to-back.

They also beat the Auburn Tigers, who may not be the team they were last year but are still talented, and beat the Alabama Crimson Tide in Alabama. They held Heisman candidate Trent Richardson to just 89 rushing yards and are the only team to deny him a touchdown this season.

Speaking of Heisman Trophies, LSU has had two possible candidates in the mix on this team, and they both play defense. Both Tyrann Mathieu and Morris Claiborne have been mentioned throughout the season as possible Heisman winners. That's pretty impressive in itself.

I know the Tigers still have a ton of football left to play, but let's assume they run the table and win the SEC Championship and the National Championship.

That would mean they have beaten eight ranked teams (not including possibly Alabama twice), three of which where ranked in the top three in the polls. If you count possibly Alabama in the National Championship, they would have four wins against top three teams and nine wins against ranked opponents.

Tough schedule, huh?

Add in the fact that they have beaten every team this year by double-digits except for Alabama, and this season is even more impressive.

Despite the incidents with Jordan Jefferson, the suspension to wide receiver Russell Shepard, a new offensive coordinator in Greg Studrawa, injuries to key players like Josh Dworaczyk and suspensions to key players who tested positive for marijuana use, this team never folded under the pressure of the distractions. They kept their mind focused on the task at hand, all while running the table through a brutal schedule without receiving a scratch.

There is still a few more hurdles the Tigers have to get over. But if they do, they will have the most impressive season in the history of college football.
