WWE: Should The Rock vs John Cena at Wrestlemania Be for the WWE Championship?

A.D. Christian VitaleNov 21, 2011

After last night's show at Madison Square Garden, the Rock versus Cena feud is in getting into high gear.

John Cena and Rock's feud began earlier this year on the Road to WrestleMania. The Rock felt that John Cena started talking bad about him after his departure from the company to Hollywood.

What began as a war of words turned physical the RAW before WrestleMania 27. After the Rock sent WWE Champion The Miz out of the ring, he turned around and was hit with a massive Attitude Adjustment by John Cena. At WrestleMania 27, The Rock got his revenge when he cost John Cena the WWE championship. The night after, the both of them came to the agreement that they would face each other at WrestleMania 28.

In the following months, their war over Twitter, Facebook and WWE TV grew.

At the beginning of the summer, John Cena had a confrontation with the Rock during his birthday celebration episode on RAW. John Cena then told the Rock that he had a present that only he could give. That gift was the WWE championship.

John Cena raised the stakes of their bout to be a title match. Was this a smart move? Does it makes sense in the long run?

My answer is quite simple: No.

I will explain my position. Major WWE storylines are made months in advance with lesser storylines filled in around them.

When Cena versus Rock for the WWE championship was announced from WrestleMania 28, the creative team was not considering the other storylines and were merely adding shock to the moment.

As you can tell by recent storyline plans, John Cena is officially out of the title picture after his loss to Alberto Del Rio. Instead, Creative has decided to put the WWE title back onto CM Punk. By doing this, the WWE can maximize its superstars and set up another great main event alongside Cena versus Rock at WrestleMania 28.

In the end, all I want is to see a great match that will be remembered in history as an all-time great.
