Miami Hurricanes Football: 'Canes Self-Impose a Bowl Ban

Matthew OsborneNov 20, 2011

Well, the decision has finally been made, folks.  The University of Miami has decided that it is in its best interest not to play in a bowl game following the conclusion of their 2011 season.

Miami released the following statement:

"

We understand and share the disappointment that our student-athletes, coaches, staff, supporters and fans are feeling but after lengthy discussions among university leaders, athletic administrators and outside counsel, it is a necessary step for our university. The University of Miami has not self-imposed any other penalties.

I, for one, support the University in their decision.  As much as I wanted to see the 'Canes beat up on the Gators in some lackluster bowl game, it was probably wise to self-impose a ban—at least to take some of the heat off of themselves.  There is no telling what further sanctions Miami may fall victim to, but this decision will at least get the ball rolling.

Yet, in the back of my mind, what if the NCAA gave Miami a slap on the wrist?  Then the self-imposed bowl ban would have been pointless.  After all, Ohio State didn't receive the harsh penalties that all expected.

Nevertheless, the upcoming game vs. Boston College will be the last game for the Miami seniors.  It would have been nice to see Jacory Harris and Sean Spence go out on top, but it is what it is.  Head coach Al Golden will certainly get his first bowl victory sooner rather than later.

So until September of 2012, it is time for Miami to hit the recruiting trail.
