Manny Pacquiao: A 4th Fight with Marquez Could End His Career
Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank and Manny Pacquiao's promoter, is leaning toward a fourth fight with Juan Manual Marquez—despite the fact that the punches Pacquiao has taken in the first three fights against Marquez could be speeding up an end to his boxing career.
Many boxers have searched their souls in order to find out why they have so much trouble against a particular opponent in the ring. In the boxing world, this is better known as a fighter who has his opponent's “ticket,” and it haunts a fighter and fosters in him a false belief that he can beat an opponent whose style presents countless problems that can’t be solved.
Pacquiao has this challenge with Marquez, and a fourth fight with Marquez could be damaging to Pacquiao and could possibly end his career as a boxer.
He could get knocked out by Marquez in a fourth fight, and the risk is not worth the reward.
The physical damage he has received from Marquez is leading to a well-known pugilistic term in the sport, known as a fighter becoming “punch-drunk.”
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's lead trainer, doesn’t want another fight against an opponent with whom his fighter has gone 36 tough boxing rounds, and who has had little success in solving the puzzle.
“It’s a fight I kind of don’t want to do again, but we have to,” Roach admitted in a recent interview with Ben Watanabe from the Daily Blend.
Pacquiao should move on and take the mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather. A fight such as that would be advantageous over being forced into another brutal rematch with Marquez, that may likely cause him additional bodily harm.
