Diary of a College Football Fan: Bowl Season Looms...

Gage ArnoldCorrespondent IDecember 17, 2008

Look! Do you see it? It's right there, standing with arms wide open ready to embrace us. Do you know what it is? Why of course it's Bowl Season, back and better than ever, allegedly.

The time is upon us. After countless hours of flipping through NBA games of the Hawks and Grizzlies...Wow, groundbreaking action going on there.

But wait, you could always watch Sacramento State play Liberty University in college hoops...

I'm not even going to tread that water, because frankly, I don't want to be proclaimed a racist from Sir Charles.

But this really sparked some good questions, and have in turn led me to a great transition of End of Regular Season to Bowl Season, and also it leads me to a nice transition in my story. Aren't transitions fun?

So with the hiring of Gene Chizik by Auburn, Charles Barkley spoke up by saying, "I look at things from a common sense standpoint, how do you interview Turner Gill and pick Gene Chizik over Turner Gill?"

It's easy chuck, when you look at Chizik's resume, he comes off as a very polished coordinator.

He just had the guts to take on an depleted Iowa State team, who in fact was completely behind the standard, and thus suffered with their play on the field.

Either that, or in fact I am an Auburn biased Tennessee fan.

I look at things vertically, and then decipher exactly the facts and what is truth or not. And in this Chuck, facts are showing that this is not a race issue. Thanks for turning the knob on the Race War back up again though...

But this really posed a great question to me, is it time for the NCAA to adopt the Rooney Rule that has been placed in the NFL and worked quite well so far?

In my honest opinion I think we in fact should. This truly hurts nothing, and in fact really helps minorities at least get their foot in the door.

And of course once this begins and one minority coach and win a National Championship. I wouldn't expect to see the snowball effect beginning. Do you hear that rumble...

But don't worry passengers, we're back on track. We have reached the summit. Now the bowl season kicks off.

And what better way to start it off than with a trio of matchups spread across the states.

First we have the Eagle Bank Bowl pitting Wake Forest and Navy. Woo! I can't wait to see Wake put up 40 points on Navy's defense.

So you don't like Jazz, how about some country music.

Our next game is the New Mexico Bowl as Colorado State takes on Fresno State. Hmmm, not bad, I mean while this won't be a blowout, I still see Fresno taking it home, because c'mon it's Colorado State...Do you really expect Fresno to lose?

Wait, our last matchup brings us some good ol' rock and roll.

The MagicJack St. Petersburgh Bowl that has South Florida and Memphis. Well I'm gonna give you guys three guesses to who will win this game, and the first two don't count.

Obviously I see USF blowing Memphis out of the water, and then maybe taking a scuba dive since they're pretty much playing at home. Don't worry Memphis, basketball is here, it's your time to shine, maybe.

So all in all, I am beyond pumped up, because even though I see every opening day game being a blowout, I still will root for every underdog. That my friends is what Bowl Season is all about: the little guy rising above and taking down Goliath.

Until next time...

P.S. Go Midshipmen!
