Pacquiao vs Marquez Undercard: Top Underdogs with Little Risk

Michael DixonNov 12, 2011

Generally speaking, I don't like betting on an underdog, unless of course I feel that they will actually win. Barring a point spread, or whatever the given sport's equivalent is, it seems pointless.

After all, even if they are getting great odds, why bet on someone who you think stands little chance?

Well, in boxing, there is always a chance. It can take literally one punch to completely shift the direction of a fight.

So, when you consider that and what odds these guys are getting, they are at least worth thinking about.

All odds courtesy of Bodog.

Breidis Prescott (+300) vs. Mike Alvarado (-450)

Prescott sports a very nice 24-3 record, but that's not why he's a good play. No, 19 of those 24 wins came by knockout.

If he was a heavyweight, I wouldn't be so impressed by that. As a lightweight, that's a pretty stellar ratio.

Alvarado is 31-0. That's certainly a record deserving of being the favorite. But given Prescott's ability to land a knockout, he's worth a small bet.

Ayi Bruce (+400) vs. Dennis Laurente (-600)

Bruce sports a 20-4 record, but only 12 knockouts. That's not a particularly impressive percentage, but that's not why he's here. No, that is more because of his opponent.

I have nothing against Laurente, but his 36-3-5 record hardly suggests that you should be afraid to bet against him.

Laurente is also nine years older than Bruce. This is certainly worth a risk.

Joel Casamayor (+900) vs. Timothy Bradley (-2000)

First of all, I don't care how confident you are in Bradley's ability, betting on him would be an awful idea. You can do the math and figure out what kind of money you would need to put down for Bradley to be worth your while.

While you're at it, do the math and figure out how little of a bet you would have to place on Casamayor for him to win.

The odds are this way for a reason, but given how vast they are, Casamayor is worth a risk.
