Ever since I heard the rumor that Gene Chizik was going to be announced as Auburn's new head coach, I was trying to reminisce about some of my favorite Auburn teams. Those teams had players like Karlos Dansby, Reggie Torbor, Carlos Rogers, and Junior Rosegreen.
Those are some of the players Gene Chizik was coaching when he was Auburn's defensive coordinator. They were fast, they gang tackled, and they flew all over the field. The 2004 Auburn defense was unbelievable.
I am still disappointed to this day, and I will never be able to let go of the fact that the 2004 Auburn Tigers did not get a shot to play in the National Championship game. That team had style and what appeared to be awesome coaching as well.
When I would watch Gene Chizik on the sidelines I thought someday he will make a really good head coach.
In the famous words of former Auburn offensive coordinator Al Borges: "It's more about the Jimmies and Joe's than the X's and O's."
That quote rings true today, like a shotgun blast on duck hunting season's opening day.
I just don't know what to think now. I read countless articles by amateur and professional journalists saying Auburn doesn't have any talent. Well, personally, that is a bunch of malarkey. Auburn has talent and will always get "good" talent.
Now the serious issue is, will Auburn get "good" coaching? When Auburn forced Tubs out, I was extremely disappointed, but I thought, "Hey, if this is the case, then let's get a coach in here that's either hungry and marketable or a proven winner on some level."
So, what does the athletic department do in the wake of forcing out a proven winner and class act? They hire a coach who left Auburn to take the co-defensive coordinator job at Texas! Perplexing I know, and wishy washy at best.
Did nobody really want the job? Did Auburn just settle, or did this guy give a great interview and show he has the tools and philosophy to make Auburn a contender in light of this potential fall from national respect and contention.
His head coaching record is horrible, but he did get an extension at the end of this season at Iowa State. Makes you wonder why? But my interpretation of a 10-game losing streak is, "What a bozo, now he's our HEAD COACH!?!"
Hopefully things work out for my beloved Auburn Tigers. Maybe they know something I don't. Surely they do, but it still makes you think of the classic Joe Dirt response to the lack of explosives in Kicking Wing's fireworks stand.
