Texas A&M Football: Why DC Tim DeRuyter Will Be Sought After in the Future
The Aggie defense hasn't exactly been the premiere look for college football as of late, but A&M's defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter is going to be one of the most sought after coaches over the next few years. His aggressive 3-4 defense and hyped up coaching style has him ranked as one of the best in the league.
After last season, Tulsa lost its head coach to Pitt and was searching for someone to replace him. They went after DeRuyter who eventually turned down the job in favor of staying at College Station. For Aggie fans, this made us all breathe a sigh of relief.
However, if a bigger school comes calling, we can't seriously expect him to turn them down. If a big time Division I school comes after DeRuyter looking for a head coach, the temptation of finally heading up a team for his own is going to be far too great.
DeRuyter is known for being a graduate of the Air Force Academy. He played there from 1982-1984, helping the team secure three bowl victories. He has also been the defensive coordinator there, coaching from 1991-1994 and 2007-2009.
He has been heard saying that his dream head coaching job is at his alma mater and has obviously been working towards that his entire career. When Mike Sherman came calling from such a big time school like Texas A&M, he couldn't resist.
Over his years coaching defenses, he has been extremely successful. During his second tenure at Ohio, he improved the defense from No. 99 nationally to No. 22 in just a two year period. At Air Force the second time around, DeRuyter helped the defense move from 78th to 11th, also in a two year span.
Once Sherman got him to College Station in 2010, DeRuyter and his 3-4 defensive scheme improved the Aggies from No. 101 in total defense in 2009 to No. 58 in 2010. His talents are obviously very real as DeRuyter has shown college football on many levels he knows how to stop offenses.
Over the next few years as DeRuyter's own recruits begin to fill the Aggie defense, watch for the SEC to become fumed over the A&M defense and its stopping power. His stock will increase dramatically and lead to his hiring as the head coach of a large university looking for new blood to save their defense.
