Rangers-Hurricanes: Rangers Blow Away Canes in Five Round Shoot out

Cj ReoContributor IDecember 13, 2008

It took the "fifth period," but the NY Rangers rebound from the 8-5 loss in Newark last night and defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in a shoot out. The shoot out went five rounds and the Rangers won it 1-0.

The first period seemed like it was from last night, because there were three goals. The first came off a PP goal by Markus Naslund, and the NY Rangers had themselves a 1-0 lead.

And also like last night when the Rangers tied the game 5-5, they gave up a goal in 12 seconds as a fast rebound goal by Carolina's Tuomo Ruutu tied this game at one.

But before the period was over there was one more goal scored and it was shorthanded. So most Rangers fans think they are losing 2-1, but not this time, as the Rangers get a SH goal by Blair Betts. At the end of the first period, the Rangers find themselves ahead of the Canes 2-1.

There was only one goal in the second period and it came at 7:19, when Ray Whitney knocks in his 10th. At the end of the second period, this game is even at 2-2.

Some third period PP kills, including some five-on-three time, helped the NY Rangers get to OT with the Carolina Hurricanes. The score was 2-2 at the end of regulation.

Since the Devils lost to the Sabres 4-2 today, and the Pens tasted defeat 6-3 vs. the newly named second place Flyers (Division), the NYR get two points on those two big rivals.

OT contained three great pad saves by Lundqvist, a BA save for Canes G Cam Ward and a post by Chris Drury. But that all adds up to no goals and a shoot out, in which the Rangers are a league best 7-1.

The first four shooters for both teams (NYR: Naslund, Zherdev, Sjostrom and Gomez; CAR: Cullen, Samsonov, Whitney and Staal) all got the same words in their ears from the MSG PA Announcer...SAVE!

But one of the fifth round shooters got a different word from the PA Announcer, and you can pretty much guess who it was if you read the title.

Chris Drury the Captain, came in and pulled up to Ward's right. Ward went down, and Drury buried it up top. Carolina's Justin Williams couldn't beat the king, and the game was over. Final score Canes 2 Rangers 3 F/SO.

The Canes got one point and now sit at 31 points, two back of eighth place Buffalo, who defeated the seventh place Devils 4-2 today at The Rock.

The Rangers got two points and are now up to 42 points, which is four back of Boston. The Bruins are first in the conference, and today defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 4-2. The Thrashers remain last in the NHL along with the NY Islanders and the TB Lightning who both lost today.

The Rangers are back in action Tuesday, when they visit the Ducks at the Honda Center in Anaheim. If the Rangers win, you will hear from me once again.

Final score: Rangers defeat the Canes 3-2 in a shootout (SO: 1-0 NYR).

Thanks for reading people.

CJ's MVP: Henrik Lundqvist (29-31 and 5-5 in SO).
