Welcome the Sante Fe Mountain Lions to the MiLB's Pecos League

Devon TeepleNov 3, 2011

Commissioner Andrew Dunn has announced that, of the six teams that make up the Pecos League, the Sante Fe Mountain Lions will be its newest member.

It will no doubt be a tough go-around for a first-year club in a second-year league, but hopefully the guidance of new manager Bill Moore will lead them in the right direction.

“He makes Santa Fe an immediate contender," Dunn said. "He brings credibility and a ton of experience with him. We're lucky to have him, but he probably wouldn't have come to us if Santa Fe didn't have a team.”

This is a solid commitment, which is all the city could ask for. As mentioned in my previous articles about the Independents, the commitment to the city and its fans is first and foremost. And with the commitment that Dunn is showing, it can only bode well for a successful inaugural campaign.

With a new team, the focus is also on providing the best sort of environment and entertainment for its fans, and with that comes the attempts at getting permission to sell alcohol.

In my personal opinion, it seems like a no-brainer that alcohol and sports go hand in hand, but it might not seem so easy. With the rumblings about the Boston Red Sox drinking in the clubhouse during games and the unfortunate incidents that have occurred at recent sporting events, something like this might become more difficult than you might think. On November 9, Dunn and Moore will go before the city to state their case.

Regardless of the result, this is very big news for both the Pecos League and Santa Fe. Congratulations to both—I know it will make for a great 2012 season.
