Marco Simoncelli Crash: Accidents Shouldn't Call for Change in Racing

Eric BowmanOct 24, 2011

The racing world was once again hit with tragic news over the weekend, as young Marco Simoncelli died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash at the Malaysian GP on Sunday.

This was the same track on which Simoncelli won the 2008 world championship in the 250cc class.

It was a horrible accident, but there isn't much that could have been done to prevent it. MotoGP already takes bikers' safety very seriously, and this is nothing more than a heartbreaking accident.

World Superbike champion James Toseland told BBC Sport that Simoncelli was loved by all.

"

"Marco was such a likeable lad. I think everybody envied his hairstyle, charisma and will to win.

"He was a lovely, quiet lad away from the track but once he pulled his helmet on, he was the most ferocious winner out there.

"He was a great champion and he was already looking like a superstar in MotoGP."

"

Toseland also called this a "freak accident," which is exactly the truth.

The racing community is saddened by this unfortunate event, but calling for drastic changes is not needed.

All riders know the risk of racing, and it is something they deal with every time they put their helmets on. Accidents happen all the time, but rarely do they take the life of riders.

Still, though, the bikers know that something like this could happen at a moment's notice. They get a thrill from going extremely fast around sharp corners, and much like with any sport out there, the reward outweighs the risk.

Simoncelli will not be forgotten, as all riders will remember him every time they prepare for a race. They know that could have been them out there.

It's the risky nature of racing, but an awful accident like this doesn't mean radical measures need to take place.

Winning is everything to these guys, and even though a life was taken this past weekend, they will still ride on, albeit with heavy hearts.
