BCS Rankings: Why We Need a 2 Team Conference Limit

Joel BarkerOct 22, 2011

Early this season, there was talk of the BCS eliminating the two team conference limit for BCS bowl games.

Of course, the conference commissioner who brought up the subject was SEC commissioner Mike Slive.

What other conference commissioner could possibly have an issue with the BCS allowing just two teams per conference into the Bowl Championship Series?

The SEC routinely has more than two BCS bowl worthy teams. 2011 should be no different with Alabama, LSU and Arkansas carrying the conference standard.

With the SEC being the only conference that really has to worry about a two team BCS limit, some may say what's the big deal? One conference gets three teams in. So what?

First of all, since when did college football become "the SEC and everybody else?" Sure, SEC fans not only agree with that statement, but most probably have a T-shirt with those very words scrawled on the front.

Too bad that's just simply not the case.

Hundreds of players on dozens of teams in six major conferences play their hearts out in just as many games as SEC teams and players do.

Taking one spot away from one of those deserving teams is not only completely wrong, but it's irresponsible.

And what about the Boise State's and TCU's of the world? Sure, those teams will be joining BCS automatic qualifying conferences soon, but those Cinderella teams are the closest thing college football will ever have to March Madness.

Considering fairness is the argument against this proposed change in the BCS, it's likely that the change will take place. The BCS has never worried about such silly things in the past.

Allowing a third team from the SEC would equal dollar signs for everyone involved. For that very reason, you can count on it happening in the very near future.
