With the Nets’ hot start, which has come out of nowhere to say the least, many are wondering how good they actually are.
This team is still on the rise and with the way that they are currently playing, it seems as if they can run with any team in the NBA.
With this fact in mind, can the Nets run with the reigning world champion Boston Celtics? While anything can happen, as of now the answer to this question is “no.”
First off, let's look at the Celtics. The big three, made up of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen, are almost impossible to fully contain.
Even on an almost perfect night, teams can only realistically think that they can stop two of the three. To stop all three would almost be a miracle, and this would be the only way to contend with the Celtics.
If a team stops Pierce and Allen, more than likely Garnett will have a career night. If a team stops Garnett and Allen, Pierce can go off for 40 points as if it is nothing. If anybody can stop Garnett and Pierce, then Allen can kill teams with his deadly three-point shooting.
Translated; you get the idea. You can only hold the Celtics back so far, but with all of the talent that they have, down the line, they will pull through against most teams in the NBA.
Looking deeper into the Nets now, minus Devin Harris and Vince Carter, the team is very young. Could any of the young guns hold any of these three stars in check?
The answer here is “probably not.”
Again, you may be able to stop one of them, or maybe, just maybe, two of them, but not all three of them. Even worse, if you do hit the lottery and somehow stop all three, others can burn you as well, such as the great bench players, and Rajon Rondo.
Rondo is one of the most underrated point guards in the game, when needed; he can score points by driving the ball to the basket.
Additionally, he can make those around him better. If other players are hitting open shots, stopping the Celtics is once again, almost impossible.
To make a long story short, the Celtics are the best team in the NBA, and until they fall, they will continue to be. At the same time though, some teams do match up well with them.
Take a look at the Hawks, who are also very young.
They took the Celtics to seven games in a first round playoff series last year. While they did get blown out in game seven in Boston, if they had the fortune of playing that game in front of their home crowd, anything could have happened.
The point here is that over a few games, anything can happen.
If the Nets can somehow play their best basketball over a single series, assuming that they make the playoffs, who knows? Maybe they could give the Celtics a run for their money.
Additionally, if the Celtics take the Nets lightly, this could come back to haunt them.
More than likely, the Celtics will win the division. The Nets have to just focus on being one of the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference.
If they do this, and if they draw the Celtics in the playoffs during the NBA postseason, they still would need a lot of help.
So the answer here is, as of now, the Nets cannot compete with the Celtics. Maybe next year if the Nets stay in tact, they can, but as of now, they cannot.
Who knows though? Teams have come out of nowhere before, and if the Nets keep on playing as well as they have been, maybe a miracle will happen.
