Hopkins vs. Dawson Results: Dawson TKO Victory Lacks Weight

Brian MaziqueOct 16, 2011

The only true winners in this boxing main event were the people that didn't purchase the pay-per-view event. The prospect of buying a PPV that features a 46-year-old in the featured bout is risky business in itself.

Your biggest fears likely came true when Bernard Hopkins threw a straight right and Chad Dawson partially slipped. Dawson ducked, Hopkins semi-hopped on this back, Dawson in-turn dumped the champion on the canvas, then all hell broke loose.

Hopkins' old body landed under the ropes on the ring apron, he immediately started writhing in pain, reaching for his shoulder. It certainly didn't look as if he was hurt that badly, but it is possible. Hopkins' use of tactics like this in the past creates doubt to the legitimacy of the injury.

Hopkins didn't get up for several minutes, he claimed he had separated his shoulder. The referee did not call a foul and called a halt to the bout. Thereby awarding Dawson with a TKO victory.

Hopkins claimed he wanted to continue the fight, but the official told him he couldn't. That certainly didn't appear to be what happened, as Hopkins didn't seem to offer any resistance when the fight was called.

Meanwhile, Dawson was furious that the fight was stopped. He accused Hopkins of quitting and not wanting to continue. Though he was awarded the title, it was obviously not the way he wanted to win it.

He yelled, "I worked hard for this," as he pointed at the grimacing Hopkins.

The victory is an empty one and does not give Dawson the validation he sought. In the post-fight interview he stood visibly annoyed, and when Max Kellerman asked him about a rematch, he seemed ready to move on to avenge his loss against Jean Pascal.

A victory in that fight will likely get him what he sought in this one: respect.
