BCS Rankings 2011: Could the Polls Overlook an Undefeated Oklahoma State Team?

Joe PenkalaOct 15, 2011

Whenever the BCS rankings come out, the conversation quickly turns to what team would be left out should the season end today.

Without a playoff format in college football, there is an opportunity for more then just two teams to finish the season undefeated. Unfortunately, one of those teams would not get an opportunity to play for the national title.

This year, we know that Alabama and LSU will go up against each other and end one team's attempt for a perfect season. We also know the same situation will occur for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State should they both be undefeated.

Along with those two teams, Wisconsin has looked unstoppable, Clemson has rolled up three impressive victories, Stanford wins the games they should but will have an opportunity to prove themselves late and Boise State continues to show up undefeated but is discounted based on their schedule.

It is common belief that a SEC team will get in and then Oklahoma will get the other spot. This leaves a huge argument for fans of the Cardinal, Broncos, Badgers and Tigers should their respective teams go undefeated.

The one thing being somewhat ignored is potential for Oklahoma State to rise up to the occasion and ride their offense all the way to an undefeated season, which would include a win over Oklahoma to end the season.

Would that season go wasted and see the Cowboys screwed in the polls? No.

Right now—SEC fans, close your eyes—in the eyes of the BCS the Big 12 is the strongest conference in the nation and a undefeated Oklahoma State team would receive a boost based on how the conference performed out of conference.

With that being said, Oklahoma State has a simple focus and goal: play their games, win out and not worry about the rest of the undefeated teams as the rankings will slowly start to correct themselves.

While Oklahoma State can rest easy, Stanford, Clemson, Boise and Wisconsin could all be programs that will quickly jump on the playoff bandwagon.
