Conference Realignment: UCF Latest Piece in Big East's Expansion Saga

Donald WoodOct 11, 2011

As if the convoluted charade known as college athletics wasn’t already tainted enough, the Big East is trying to do anything to stay afloat in the college football sector by aiming for University of Central Florida as another member of their conference.

While asking UCF itself isn’t a bad idea for the Big East, it shows just how desperate the conference is now that they lost several of their key schools to the ACC.

The sudden rush to change the way conferences are laid out is a terrible thing for college sports, but the wickedness of this world comes from money and this is exhibit A.

College football talk is reporting about the Big East’s rush to stop the bleeding:

"

Sources have told CBS Sports’ Brett McMurphy, the man on the forefront of the departures of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC, that the Big East reached out to Central Florida on Monday, likely setting the stage for a potential invite now that the conference has decided it will attempt to expand to 12 teams. As of a few weeks ago, Central Florida did not appear to be on the Big East’s immediate radar even after the departures of Pitt and Syracuse because the conference was not looking to immediately expand into states where current members reside.

"

The Big East thought their conference was impenetrable while all the other conferences started jockeying for position to snatch up teams and they sat back and just watched.

By the time they realized they would have to get involved, teams were fleeing the Big East like it was on fire and the conference will suffer greatly because of the arrogance of the commissioner and board of directors.

Conference realignment is becoming the death of college sports, and if the greed that persists in college athletics radiates even further into the second-tier schools, there will be no sanctity left in the once cherished traditions of NCAA rivalries.
