Red Bull Flugtag 2011: 3 Reasons World Needs More Flugtag

Richard Langford@@noontide34Correspondent IOctober 10, 2011

I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more Flugtag. My ailment began to settle in as I was looking at the photos from the recent Tampa, Florida Red Bull Flugtag event.

Here is why I feel the globe is sorely lacking in Flugtag events.

Celebration of Creativity

Flugtag is less a competition than it is a celebration of creativity. And this creativity can be aimed in many ways. A falling pig like this one:

will get as many cheers as a glider that does more flying than falling and wins the event.

It's Unique

In a world where things get quickly copied and replicated, this event is completely unique. There is nothing else quite like it. It is refreshing. It is half performance, half competition, half game show (I think that was too many halves).

I enjoy all of the above elements when they are isolated. Wrap those into one and you have a big pile of awesome.

The Event

This is the main reason we need more Flugtag. It is an event, and that event needs to go to more cities. In all of the videos and pictures I have seen of these events the atmosphere seems like a giant party.

These events are held by the water, they draw big fun-loving crowds, go at a relaxed pace and allow for plenty of mingling. These are the perfect ingredients for a staple of a must-attend event.
