4 Reasons Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva Will Never Happen

Jeffrey McKinneyOct 6, 2011

Two of the biggest names in MMA right now are Jon Jones and Anderson Silva.

Silva is the current UFC middleweight champion and MMA's best at the moment.

Jones, on the other hand, is the UFC’s quickest-rising star and light heavyweight champ.

Jones has received many comparisons to Silva thanks to him looking almost unstoppable inside the Octagon and having an unorthodox fighting style.

After Jones beat Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 135, many fans discussed a possible super fight between Jones and Silva.

While the fight would be entertaining, it's not going to happen. Keep reading to find out why.

There Is a Long Line of Title Contenders for Jones

For years, the light heavyweight division has been one of the most stacked divisions in MMA.

Jones has only had one title defense thus far and should have several more before any super fight should take place.

Along with Rashad Evans, Jones will be looking at a long list of light heavyweights that includes Lyoto Machida, Dan Henderson and a possible rematch with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Silva Has a Few Fights Left at Middleweight

Although it may seem like Silva has completely cleaned out the division, there are still a few intriguing fights left for him.

The winner of Brian Stann vs. Chael Sonnen is one possibility for Silva.

Silva has never faced Stann, while Sonnen is the only man to make Silva look human in the Octagon.

Another intriguing fight is a rematch with Dan Henderson.

Henderson is currently fighting at light heavyweight but could make an exception to move down in order to face Silva.

Silva's Age

Although Anderson Silva hasn't showed any signs of slowing down, he is 37 years old.

Usually the age when most athletes start to decline is around 35.

Although there have been a few exceptions in MMA, it is still one of the most demanding sports in the world.

By the time Jones gets through the light heavyweight division, Silva could already be in retirement.

Another Superfight Makes More Sense Right Now

4 of 5

Although Jones vs. Silva would be a great fight, the super fight that makes the most sense at the moment is Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva.

Both St-Pierre and Silva have nearly cleaned out their divisions, and talk of the two fighting has gone on for a couple of years now.

If the UFC was going to make any super fight happen, this should be the one.

Conclusion

5 of 5

Although this is a fight that many of us would like to see, odds are it's not going to happen.

St-Pierre vs. Silva has a better chance of happening, and we've seen talk of that fight die down.
