WWE News: Steve Austin Rumored to Be in Survivor Series Main Event

Imaan JalaliOct 3, 2011

The Rock has already been confirmed to wrestle at the 25th annual Survivor Series in Madison Square Garden.

Now, rumors are swirling, according to WrestleZone.com, about Steve Austin possibly taking part in his first match back in eight years at the very same event.

Per the report, Vince McMahon is apparently adamant about presenting Survivor Series as a WrestleMania-esque show, and is, in fact, already putting the pieces in place for the fall extravaganza.

The current storylines are being paced to culminate at the show, pitting a rogue faction, featuring The Miz, R-Truth, Kevin Nash, among others, against a squad representative of the WWE legacy, past and present.

As you can imagine, John Cena, Triple H, The Rock, and perhaps even Vince McMahon himself, are slated to be part of Team WWE. If "Stone Cold" agrees to take part in the five-on-five traditional elimination match, CM Punk is a lock for the team, given his relationship with Austin.

Because of their mutual interest in working a program, the idea would be to give the two screen time, planting the seeds for an eventual match between the "straight edge" Punk and the beer-swilling "Rattlesnake" down the line, maybe at WrestleMania 28.

If Austin declines the offer to compete, The Undertaker would presumably be his replacement on Team WWE. Nevertheless, plans are expected to be finalized by the end of the Vengeance PPV in three weeks.

If this comes to fruition, it would be very reminiscent of a similar match that occurred at Survivor Series, exactly a decade ago, when the WCW/ECW "Alliance" battled Team WWF, at the time, for company supremacy.

Such a match would breathe new life into an organization that has pitter-pattered around, taking few risks, complacently transitioning from one PPV to the next with little incentive for the consumer.

The Attitude Era stars, if used correctly, could give the new performers of today—like The Miz and R-Truth—legitimate standing and credibility in the eyes of the "WWE Universe."

Of course, it follows that the proper ending to such an astronomical match would be for the anti-WWE stable to outfox the WWE stalwarts. There are several ways to go about scripting the finish, but obvious choices would be Rock-Cena or Punk-Austin dissension.

In effect, the young "insurgents" would be firmly established, postponing the upending of the doom and gloom plaguing WWE until WrestleMania 28 or beyond.
