College Football Rankings: Can Alabama Move Ahead of Oklahoma for No. 1?

Ian HanfordOct 2, 2011

The Oklahoma Sooners are the No.1 team in the nation according to the most recent USA Today poll. They hold that spot by six votes over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

In Week 5, Oklahoma improved to 4-0 with a 62-6 victory over Ball State. Anytime a team wins by 56 points, it is a great win. However, it is Ball State and this is Week 5. Out-of-conference cupcakes should hurt a team's resume at this point in the season.

The Crimson Tide scored their biggest victory of the season in Week 5. The Tide handed the Florida Gators a 38-10 loss in "The Swamp." This victory was Alabama's second SEC victory and third victory against Top 25 opponents.

The Tide are now 5-0. That gives them one more victory than the Sooners. Saturday night's win also makes 'Bama's resume stronger than the Sooners' current situation.

The Sooners have played one ranked opponent. In Week 2, the Sooners knocked off Florida State 23-13 in Doak Campbell Stadium. At the time, the Seminoles were ranked No.5.

Other than the Seminoles, the Sooners have played unranked opponents. Tulsa and Ball State presented no challenge. However, Missouri played Oklahoma very tough. The Sooners would eventually win 38-28.

The sample size is still small: Five games for the Tide and four for the Sooners.

That means each game against a ranked opponent is so important. It gives a team the chance to prove their value early in the season in front of a national audience.

The Sooners have a chance to bolster their resume. Four ranked opponents remain on their regular season slate, including No.17 Texas in Week 6.

The Tide will also have a chance to bolster their resume in the rugged SEC. Only one ranked opponent remains. However, that opponent is the LSU Tigers. The Tide and the Tigers are arguably the two best teams, and defenses, in the nation.

Rankings don't necessarily matter at this point in the season. Pride and bragging rights are still on the line, though.

After five weeks, the edge should go to the Crimson Tide. However, they may have to wait a few weeks to enjoy the view from the top.
