EPL, Manchester United, Ryan Giggs , Nani

Ryan Giggs is one of the most evergreen players the Premier League has ever seen.

Born and bred United, this Welsh International can be regarded as the best left winger to have ever graced the greens of not only Old Trafford, but also the EPL.

If you are speaking against him, then beware of his 18 major honors, that includes an unprecedented 9 league titles and a Treble.

But in the wake of this new generation of Man United players, Ryan has not been in his peak form in many of the game's he has played.

Undoubtedly a point of controversy, as i will find many hardcore United fans raving at me that Giggs is class, he is fabulous and he can excel in matches.

I won't disagree at all, but when you look at his age (34), you must be surprised at how he can play for a team each week.

Thanks to his Yoga programs and the United physios.

However, when an average player crosses 32/33 years old, the first flair that he looses from his game is speed. It's quite visible on field that Giggs doesn't run these days as he did five or six years back.

There's no question of his agility and composure, as you can see him playing for over an hour. Also, he has spectacularly maintained his finesse, for which he is still the No. 11 at Old Trafford.

United have recently signed a Portuguese prodigy in the shape of Nani, who is likened to Crisitiano Ronaldo when he first came at Old Trafford back in 2003.

The left winger has come in as a future replacement for Giggs, and he has got blistering pace, tremendous shot power and outwitting skills. But the only thing which has kept him out from starting for United regularly is his experience.

He's a neophyte to English Football and is still just 20. Where Sir Alex Ferguson always opts for a cocktail of experience, talent and a little of youth, you can't expect Nani to knock off Giggs from the starting 11 straightaway.

What I have noticed throughout the season, however, is a lack of speed and aggression down the left flank.

Evra always comes out of his left back position and assists Giggs to keep up the pressure in the left, but how long will Evra leave his defense stranded?

I don't mean that Giggs can't do it all alone—come on haven't you seen those cheeky dummies and freestyles?

But, United have to level up their speed cumulatively in order to keep up with the pace of other EPL teams. The one man who is struggling to do so is Ryan Giggs.

Therefore, in my opinion, Nani should be given more games to acclimatize with the intensity of English football and develop a consistent team chemistry with his peers.

Of course you are not keeping Giggsy out forever—he may play a vital role in several key matches in the league and also in Europe.

It will not certainly cost United several defeats to make Nani a fully-fledged winger, and you can expect some insane attempts on goal, some immature fouls, and on the positive side, some moments of magic!

  1. I've just read your comments and couldn't disagree more! My first point would be that Evra was bought as an attacking full back if you watch carefully when Evra is up the flank Brown (or who ever playing at Right back) sits back along with one of the central midfield plays namely Hargreaves when fit. Giggs also defensively holds great positions allowing Evra to attack something that he wouldn't have the licence to do if Nani played. My second point which is probably the most truthful Giggs no long plays only on the left wing and hasn't for 3 or 4 seasons, united play a system that let the front four players switch places, Giggs often is playing through the centre making runs to draw out defenders creating the space for other players. Giggs is rested in games these days as any player who is his age is but at the present Nani (who i think has massive potential dont get me wrong) isn't the player who covers Giggs when he is absent. If Giggs is rested I'd rather Anderson played than Nani at this current time.

    1. That's my point..until you give Nani some chance, you wont be able to discover his full potential. How many games has Nani startedthis season? 4-5?

Ronaldo didnt have any competition in his right wing when he came at OT, so he continued to play in his position and honed his gameplay. But Giggs is keeping out Nani week in and week out-what i fear is one day Nani will get upset and may intend to leave!!

Remember Giggs will also play in the next season..hopefully Nani may wait for that long

  2. Giggs doesnt want a rest, as he'll lose his place 2 nani

  3. Nani has started ten games in the Premiership this season, as well as featuring as a sub on a further eight occassions so he’s been involved in the majority of games thus far. I think we will see Nani come into play more and more as the season progresses as the games start to come thick and fast – especially if United continue to progress in the FA Cup and Champions League. However, I think we will find that Ferguson will not trust Nani in the big, must win games so he will most likely get his games before these come around so that Giggs is fresh for these.

Ferguson will have explained to Nani that he’s not going to be first-choice straight away but that of course Giggs can’t go on forever and there’s no-one better for Nani to learn off in the next few years. Giggs still offers more than Nani at this point in time, mainly due to his experience and consistency whereas Nani is still very much hit-and-miss at the moment as you acknowledge in your article.

Nani will be pressing Park Ji-Sung hard for the starting place vacated by Rooney for Sunday’s game and will probably get the nod I imagine with Ronaldo pushing further forward.

I do agree with anon above though that Giggs offers much better defensive protection for Evra when he bombs forward (experience again and something that Nani will learn) and so will get the nod in the big games. He is also more adept at playing centrally as noted.

However, he is 34 so will not play every game – so you are right, he WILL be rested – but only because Fergie will want him for the biggest games of all.

    1. Actually my headline read Why Giggs should be rested OFTEN, but the editor missed that out, perhaps he didnt come to terms with my argument!!!

I knw SAF told Nani that he shudn't expect a regular callup, so Nani has seth is mind liek that. but whoknows when he changes his mind and decides to move on?

I really like his vibrance and he can really do the job in the wing, but the problem is he never wants to play in dfensinve role, which Giggs can carry out well when asked for..

Let's see what the future holds for Nani

  4. diverse

  5. Surely if you're rested OFTEN then it's not really being "rested" but just plain "dropped"!!
