UFC 135 Results: 3 Most Impressive Moves from Preliminary Fights

Josh MartinSep 24, 2011

UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage has brought mixed martial arts back to Denver, Colorado with a bang. The preliminary card gave fans and observers plenty to cheer about, nail-biters and knockouts alike.

These three gems, in particular, stood out as the most jaw-dropping (or, in one case, jaw-breaking) moments of the early bouts.

Ricardo Romero came in with the upper hand against James Te-Huna. Romero's superior athleticism and grappling skills were supposed to be too much for the New Zealand fighter to handle.

And then, as happens on occasion, Te-Huna got lucky and landed some devastating strikes on his opponent. Romero tried his darndest to get Te-Huna on the ground but was met with a vicious right hand and, thus, found himself on the mat.

Romero recovered, but not for long, as Te-Huna came back with a devastating right uppercut to knock Romero out cold just 47 seconds into the fight.

So devastating, in fact, that referee Tim Mills had to remind Romero what was going on and reassure the downed fighter that everything would be okay.

Tim Boetsch's Hip Toss Against Nick Ring

Things really got interesting once the broadcast switched from Facebook to Spike. Tim "The Barbarian" Boetsch was clearly in control of his fight with Nick "The Promise" Ring but really closed it out with a picture-perfect hip throw in the third round.

If ever you were seeking a textbook example of a harai goshi, look no further than Boetsch's brilliant move on Ring, which for him sealed a win by unanimous decision.

Tony Ferguson's Bone-Crushing Crack on Aaron Riley's Jaw

It's tough to say here which was more impressive—Tony Ferguson's blows that broke Aaron Riley's jaw or the fact that Riley fought through the pain to finish out the first round.

Seeing as how the fight went to Ferguson in a TKO, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The quick burst of brutality began with a couple of right uppercuts by Ferguson between kicks from Riley. The tide turned quite dramatically, though, when Ferguson landed a devastating left uppercut-right hook combo, followed by yet another uppercut, to send Riley stumbling back.

Riley recovered, but it was clear that not all was well, with his jaw slacked in an unusual position.

Once the first round was over, Riley wasted no time telling his corner that his jaw was broken, bringing the fight to a swift end in Ferguson's favor.
