World series title for the Yankees in 2009?
I’ve read at nydailynews.com that Hal is the official owner, and I’ve also read in the same article that George Steinbrenner’s health has declined because of a pair of falls.
I think I’m headed in the same direction. I fell straight backwards and hit my head against the hard ground and everything on the inside is messed up from my head to my torso and to my legs. Let’s move on.
I like Hal as the official owner more than I would like Hank because it seems that Hank acts irrational at times.
This year, it doesn’t matter who is owner because I’m still not going to like the moves the Yankees make. They are trying to buy a championship again and it’s not going to work. How do I know it’s not going to work?
- B/R Ticket Guide
Do I need a sample size or some sort of proof that it’s not going to work? Ok, look at 2001 to 2008. The Yankees brought in the biggest free agents from this time and it got them zero. Nothing. Zilch. Nada.
What makes you think that this year will be any different?
Some Yankee fans, like my father and brother, think that Sabathia is the answer. I don’t. The Yankees might make the playoffs but Sabathia is not a big-game pitcher. He gets absolutely rocked in the playoffs. I can only imagine what would happen when he pitches for the Yankees in the playoffs with the New York pressure.
Can’t Yankee fans see that 2009 is doomed for failure? Do you actually feel the Yankees will win the world series?
I don’t feel it. I’ll never feel it as long as the Steinbrenner family keep buying free agents.
I thought that Hank was going to bring in young players from the farm. He tried it one year and didn’t follow through. It was only one year. You can’t expect to win with young players in the first year. Younger players need more seasoning.
The Yankees are going to go after A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. Burnett had a 4.07 ERA last year. He is not the answer.
Derek Lowe pitched pretty well last year but it was in the National League. The Yankees brought in too many pitchers in the past similar to him and it never worked. Lowe will be mediocre at best.
I feel the Yankees will be better off if Sabathia declines their offer and signs with another team. The Yankees have to build from within, not from outside like they’ve been doing since 2001.
Remember, the Yankees had no World Series titles since the year 2000. Who knows when the Yankees will win the World Series again, but it won’t be any time soon if they keep constructing their team with free agents.

The thing is, nobody on any team, or any fan knows the first thing about what will or wont happen. I can proudly say, in March of 08 I was the only one besides the Rays themselves saying they were the team to watch out for this year. Everyone was touting the Tigers. Where would the Yanks have been this very year had Wang not gone down. You can gaurantee that difference between the WC and 1st in the division would have been strikingly closer than it was. No one can predict who will or wont shine. No one and I mean no one knew what the Moose was gonna do this year. Maybe that offsets the Wang issue. Point is, you can love your team, you can agree or disagree with what they do, but if you dont believe whats the point? Why bother if your not living and dying with every pitch. If a world series is the only reason one follows a team, they are setting themselves up for dissapointment. Weve had more world series appearances in ten years than most teams have had in a century. That is a gift and more than we should expect. If it happens, great, it will be fun to watch, but you watch because you love, you love because your loyal. All the rest is a bi product of that loyalty. Good luck Yankees, Im sure there are more than a few surprises coming our way this coming season. CC will not be on of them. He is a given, if he signs it will be no shocker, if he doesnt, maybe it opens the door for someone like Aceves to show up and dazzle us when we werent looking. I understand your point and its well taken but theres more to it than expecations. Its a way of life, you have to believe no matter if its likely or not.

It's totally plausible to think the Yankees could win it in 2009, but here's what they will need to do.
1.Sign Mark Teixeira- he's the only sure thing on this year's market and they need a good first baseman.
2. Avoid Sabathia and Burnett and sign Derek Lowe- contrary to popular belief, these two pitchers aren't the answers. The Yankees can't sign a big game pitcher like Josh Beckett through free agency, so they should play it safe and go with a guy who has plenty of playoff experience and has delivered before.
3. Joba Chamberlain has to develop into a stopper- He has to be the ace this year who can carry the Yanks in the postseason. There's no one else available to fill this role. I don't think Wang can do it either.
4. No more aging- Damon, Jeter, Posada, Pettite, Matsui, and Rivera cannot experience drops in performance this year.
5. Young guys gotta step up- I'm talking about Cano, Melky, Hughes, and Kennedy. They can't expect to win unless these guys play a whole lot better than last year.
6. Sign Manny, get rid of Matsui- Manny provides a whole lot power and a whole lot more just about everything in terms of offense. They would need Damon to play one of the corner positions and either Gardiner or Cabrera to play center.
If all of these things happen, the Yanks have a good chance of winning it all. If some of them happen, I expect them to be a playoff team. If none of them happen, the Yanks will not be in the playoffs again.

All that is coming to the Yankees in 2009 is the laughter that will come cascading down from the bleachers when they are a sub .500 team in September and trail their division by 15 games. To put it simply, ...they are a bad baseball team.
A-Rod can't play all 9 positions. I guess that means they're in trouble. Their product is pretty bad.

You made a great point. Following a team because you like it is the way to go. My point is that the Yankees won't win the World Series and a lot of Yankee fans expect them to every year. Derek Lowe would be a good pickup.
