Georgia-Auburn Preview: The South's Oldest Rivalry Renewed

The ACC and SEC BlogNov 13, 2008

Georgia at Auburn
Line: Georgia -8

"The South’s Oldest Rivalry" will be renewed this weekend, as Georgia travels to the Plains to face a slumping Auburn team. The roles are nearly reversed from the last time these two met in Auburn in 2006, when the Tigers were flying high and Georgia was in danger of a .500 season.

Keys to the Game

1. Will Georgia Stick With The Rushing Game?

It is pretty simple, when Knowshon Moreno gets 20 carries and or 100 yards, Georgia wins. When he does not, they lose. Georgia fans hope offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has the patience to stick with Moreno. And they hope Moreno doesn’t take himself voluntarily either.

2. Does Auburn Like Swiss Cheese?

Because the Georgia defense has some holes in it. Kentucky who has an offense who could rival Auburn’s was able to rip through the Bulldog D last week for 38 points. There is a problem though because Auburn’s offense seems to regressing each week and they don’t have the athleticism at quarterback like Kentucky does. Georgia’s defense had a players’ only meeting this week and is defending their defensive coordinator Willie Martinez. This tells me there are bigger problems than talent with this unit.

3. The "Home" Crowd

Usually, Auburn is able to enjoy a raucous home crowd and a pretty big home field advantage. Auburn simply does not have the talent this year to compete at a high level so they will need a little extra emotion from the crowd. However, with the way the season has gone you will hear some boo birds if the Tigers play like they have for the last month and that would only lift Georgia who is an excellent road team under Mark Richt.

Prediction

When comparing this game to 2006 a big difference jumps out to me. At least in 2006, Georgia was losing a bunch of nail-biters to Vandy and Kentucky. Auburn is getting beaten soundly in most of these games. The Tigers do not have enough offense to match Georgia’s offense in a low-scoring game.

Georgia 31, Auburn 17
