WWE Smackdown: 5 Thoughts About Friday Night's Show

Sean O'NeilJun 2, 2018

This week's Smackdown was an eventful one, which included the announcement of a new number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, the arrival of the WWE Champion, and the disappearance of a past champion.

Some parts of the evening were done well, some were done poorly, and several questions were raised. Here are five thoughts that I had about the event.

Where Was Christian, the World Heavyweight Champion?

1 of 6

Christian lost his World Heavyweight Championship this past Sunday at Summerslam, and Friday night he was nowhere to be found.

He is supposed to get a rematch against Randy Orton at some point, but the show this week moved on without him and even crowned a new number one contender in a battle royal which Christian didn't even contend for.

It would seem that keeping Christian off the show was a way for Smackdown to move in a new direction, which seemingly does not include Captain Charisma contending for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Any thoughts?

The Battle Royal

2 of 6

Does anyone else think that the 20-man battle royal was dumb?

Before the Undisputed WWE Championship was put into play, there would be triple threat matches on RAW to determine the number one contender, and the majority of them were great matches.

For some reason, instead of having a triple threat or a fatal four way with Mark Henry, Sheamus, Christian, or Wade Barrett, the Smackdown writers opted for a battle royal. For most of the match I was bored, and the idea of someone like Yoshi Tatsu contending to be the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship (even though he has no chance of winning) is just sad.

I felt like I was watching the Divas battle royal from a few weeks a go, with the only good part being the domination by Mark Henry.

Sin Cara?

3 of 6

Once again we saw the fake Sin Cara, where the noticeable body change has been called "fat and muscle gain" by Booker T.

Where is Smackdown going with this story line? Will the man we truly know to be Hunico completely take Sin Cara's spot due to his drug abuse with the WWE or is this the start of a potential feud between the two of them?

We saw "Sin Cara" twice during the night; first when he saved Daniel Bryan from Alberto Del Rio, then again when he competed in the battle royal.

Daniel Bryan Loses Again

4 of 6

The booking of Daniel Bryan confuses me.

He has now lost three time in a row, to Del Rio, Barrett, and Del Rio again. The WWE has made the Smackdown Money in the Bank winner look vulnerable, and the only reason that I see them doing that is to set him up to lose the briefcase.

I would like to see Bryan cash in and become World Heavyweight Champion, but the way things have gone the last few weeks makes me think that he will have to do it without the blue briefcase.

Mark Henry

5 of 6

Mark Henry was, without a doubt, the superstar of the night.

The World's Strongest Man solidified himself as the number one contender during the battle royal, and he was a dominating force. I must say that my favorite moment of the night was when he threw one of the Usos through the announcers table.

Henry is making one of his strongest runs ever at becoming a World Champion, but he does have to go through Randy Orton at the Night of Champions. This may be unlikely though, since Orton just won his title back, and the constant changing of titles needs to be put on hold for a month or two.

Conclusion

So those are some thoughts I had on last night's show; please share any thoughts you may have had as well!

And as you gaze upon our Divas Champion, how annoying was Kelly Kelly at Smackdown yelling "Come on AJ!" over and over and over and over and over and over...
