I wrote a few weeks back that Steve Breaston was a great offseason signing for the Chiefs, and that he would most likely start this season. Well, I was right, but not for the reason I was hoping.

While writing my old piece, which can be seen here, I stated the following:

“Due to the lockout, first-round pick Jonathan Baldwin is experiencing an abbreviated rookie offseason, which will leave him with very limited experience with Haley and the offense. Breaston will be able to step in with his experience in Haley’s offense and give Baldwin time to watch and develop.”

Turns out the lockout will have little to do with why Baldwin will not start in 2011. It looks like the real reason Baldwin will not start is due to a butt kicking he took from team leader Thomas Jones in a locker room scuffle.

Reported by Nick Wright of 610am Sports in Kansas City, Baldwin got into a locker room scuffle with Jones. Per Wright, the scuffle led to Baldwin injuring his wrist. Wright reports he could miss the rest of preseason.

In another tweet from Wright he says, “He’s (Baldwin) as advertised. Diva, spoiled, doesn’t wanna listen. Can run a Go and a Slant, and doesn’t wanna work.”

Wright’s report will undoubtedly lead to more speculation that Baldwin is a player with problems. Coming out of Pitt there were concerns about Baldwin having a diva attitude. Getting into a fight with a team leader right off the bat is not a good sign.

Luckily for the Chiefs, Breaston was signed in the offseason. Breaston had a breakout season in 2008, under then Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley, when he caught 77 balls for 1,003 yards and three scores for the Arizona Cardinals

With this news about Baldwin, Breaston will definitely be the starter when Week 1 of the regular season hits. For the Chiefs' sake, Breaston better be able to accomplish those 2008 numbers again.

If Breaston is unable to do that Kansas City is back to where it was last season: with only one solid wide receiver. With the schedule as hard as it is this year, one receiver will not get the job done.
