Randy Couture Will Beat Brock Lesnar; We Should Already Know This!

Not one lick of research, not one moment of doubt:  Randy Couture beats Brock Lesnar and sends him where he belongs.

He'll send Brock down in the rankings to learn and earn his way back to a title shot he may very well deserve when the time comes.

Seriously people.  Do you really doubt that this will come to pass?  Randy Couture, the man who has defeated Chuck Lidell, Tim Sylvia, and Tito Ortiz?  Like it or not, that is a who's who of fighters who spent more than their share of time dominating the UFC.  That's the short list by the way.

Randy Couture is an odds-makers nightmare.  Go ahead lay it all on Brock, you might put some loan shark out of business.

If one thing has been proven over time it's this: Fights are exciting for a reason, odds help, but they do not dictate punches, damage, or the ability to avoid or absorb said punches and damage.  Randy has made a living and a fine career of making it seem easy to calculate, all the while making it impossible to predict the outcome of a fight.

Good fights are like an extraordinary paintings.  You start with a canvas, the octagon.  You take your brush, the fighters.  The brushes move across the canvas with poetry and motion, with rhythm.  The result is your masterpiece.

Some painters are better than others.  Think of Randy like Monet; think of Brock as a fourth grader with water paints.  Get the picture?

Who has Brock beaten?  Who could he not finish?  How did he suffer his defeat?  Ask yourself, if at any time had you pulled the old switch-a-roo and threw Randy in there instead of Brock, how would those fights have gone?  That's right: 3-0.

There is a different picture being painted in this scenario.  Not the random, sloppy, less than practiced picture you found when Brock faced these men.  You would have seen yet three more masterpieces by Couture.

Look closely at what your being told, and think hard about what you know you have seen.  Don't let the fairy tale deceive you.  The UFC is putting a 4th grader in the octagon with a world renowned artist who's artwork will transcend time itself.

Who's painting are you going to bid on come auction night?

One might get a Couture masterpiece quite cheap, considering where most of the fans in the fight world are focusing their bidding.

Randy's painting will prove to be the more artistic of the two, it will hold value longer, and it will be timeless, for sure.  Even if Brock's painting winds up being better, it is still just a water color, isn't it?  Will it stand the test of time as so many of Randy Couture's paintings that line the walls of the UFC studios?  Doubtful.  Highly unlikely.

Let the bidding begin, as if it has not already.

Do you choose your winner based on size, speed, age, and power?  Sounds like a safe bet, unless you know anything about the history of the UFC and some of its less than policed events in the past.  David vs. Goliath anyone?  How often did Goliath win, again rarely.

Do you choose your winner based on experience, quality of opponents, the ability to lose and return stronger, sheer craftiness, and absolute dominating fight preparation?  Another safe bet, as long as you can overlook age and ring rust.  Two very important factors.

We can not pick both, we have to choose a side and stick with it.  This isn't the first time I've said I like Randy in this fight but I wanted to shout it out for all to hear.  If I am right it will make victory twice as sweet come the following morning.  I have said it and I stand by it.

Now we wait for the masterpiece to be unveiled.  Should be interesting to watch.

Let it be known, I have shared some less than desirable opinions of Randy as of late, for the sake of arguing against certain aspects of his time as champion. I wanted to write this solely to lay to rest the notion that I have anything but respect for him. I have my opinions, but I also know when credit is due, so all respect due is being given here. I dont oppose Randy, just some of the stuff he has done. I hope this doesnt seem hypocritical to vote for him now, after questioning his motives in other articles.

"Randy Couture, the man who has defeated Chuck Lidell, Tim Sylvia, and Tito Ortiz"

      He lost to Chuck twice
      Decision against Sylvia
Tito is Tito (aka opportunist without any real mma skills except GnP - which does not work in todays mma anymore)

Even though Brock has less than stellar mma record also - I will stick with him as my pick as I am hoping that finally he will be able to finish a fight (if not - bye-bye Brock; but anything is better than rooting for another 5 round decision by Randy [if Randy wins by anything other than decision - my hats off to him - until then, once again he has something to prove as an underdog])

Understood. Points taken. The victories stand regardless of the circumstances. I respect your pick, it is the smart bet. I just like taking an adverse point of view and running with it. I will not be one bit surprised if Randy schools this guy though. No one should. On the same topic, Brock winning will not be to alarming either. For my own sake I must pick a side and preach it, it makes me feel better, even if it is a less than favorable one.

I have been saying all along that Randy should win this fight and I still feel that way. Brock is a uniquely strong guy but we all should know by now that skill beats strength. Royce beat many big strong wrestlers without all the other tools that Randy has, I don't think Brock is going to buck that trend.

I have, for my own reasons, told my entire group of friends that this will be a hard fight for Randy and I won't be surprised if Brock wins. Amongst my friends I'm the fight guru and general expert so they listen to me. Now i've got a group of people torn and biting nails as to the outcome, where as before they blindly believed that Randy would demolish this "fake wrestler".

It should make for an intense and emotional evening when Randy pulls it off. Mass alcohol consumption and Poker will ensue.

I have this feelling that makes it seem very possible for Brock to win. Id be a fool to deny the real possibility of that. That being said, when I try to wrap my mind around Randy letting this guy beat him, it just doesnt fit, like a square peg and a round hole. I just know better, time has taught me better.

My sister in law is taking her boyfriend to the fight. Bastards!!!!! Anyway, now we have a little competition amongst friends to see which event we can get tickets for. I live right down the road from Vegas, its about a 7 hour drive. I figure its not out of the realm of possibility. We all love our fighters and we have our rivalries, just like here on BR. I take everything I learn here and blow peoples minds with the info I gather here. Its fun being the Guru in your own circle. I just tell htem I used to protect Dana White when we were in school, I stopped the bullies from taking his lunch money and he feeds me inside info. Ahhhhhhh fiction can be fun, in the words of Jim Carrey.

The last time I screamed uncontrollably during a fight was when I had the pleasure and priviledge of watching Randy dismantle Tim Sylvia. I imagine if this goes my way, I wont be able to say that anymore. Good luck Randy, show him what time it is.

A gun to my head? Randy. No gun to my head? Beats me.

I have but one prediction: This fight will not see three-minutes of the first round.

I can only hope that isnt the case. Sometimes the fight itself does little justice to the build up. This is why as a back up plan, I am secretly excited about KenFLo JoDaddy. it should make the card worth while.

I'll take the other side of the argument that the fight doesn't go past three minutes of the first round.

I believe both fighters will begin the fight with caution, showing respect for each other. Also, both fighters understand the importance of having some gas left in the tank for the later rounds if they're unable to finish the fight early. I believe we'll see a measured pace until near the end of the first round. I can see the pace picking up in the second round, but not the rapid pace we would see the lightweights at.

Quite frankly, I've got a feeling we may see a rather boring fight in terms of the action. But it will be exciting because of the significance of the event.

I'm picking Couture by late round TKO. I've stated my reasons why in previous articles. I'll be watching the fights at a sportsbar, and I can't wait to watch the reaction of the crowd!!

The interesting thing about this match is the fact that Both Lesnar & Couture are
Wrestlers in the purest sense of the word, and this will be the first time Couture has faced
a Wrestler with skills on par or even superior to his own, You have to remember that Randy
is NO submission guru, so i Highly doubt we'll see another Frank Mir repeat come saturday night,
I think the big question really is how solid is Lesnars Chin? can he take a shot or better yet
can he take repeated shots and can he hold his ground in later rounds?
If the answer is Yes then Brock is well on his way to being the next Great UFC Heavyweight
If the answer is No then Randy once again defies the odds

I dont know why, and have no solid evidence for my thoughts, that being said Karo Parysian is a friend and training partner of Randys. Karo is an Olympic level Judo practitioner. These guys pal around a gym at times. There is a part of me, totally guessing of course, that tells me Randy has been working on some Judo throws and tosses. Brock commits to whatever movement he chooses. It is hard to not see it coming. If that is the case, you must weather the storm, even if you know it is inevitable. Imagine Randy posturing and grappling in such a fashion to break Brocks momentum over his hips or legs. Brock may very well get a lesson in something he has yet to study come Saturday night. Brock may bust Randy up and make me look like a fool for saying otherwise. I cant wait either way.

I've read a lot of articles about MMA and it's obvious a lot of the authors have no real knowledge of what the basis of MMA is and where it came from.

Todd I take my hat off to you I can tell you didn't start watching MMA a week ago and you understand the fundamentals and dynamics of the sport.

The most dominant fighters when MMA wasn't sugar coated and the fights weren't picked to make sure the PPV seller doesn't lose were always the guys like the Gracie brothers.

MMA fundamentally is about technical aspect it's very little to do with striking or anything else, striking has never been a big part of MMA and the dominance has always come by fighters who are good on the ground.

Nowadays the UFC tries to set up fights without technical aspects and try to keep it off the ground and striking for obvious reasons but a big stronger striking type dude will never in his life beat a technically sound guy apart from a lucky knock out or something of that nature.

At the very heart MMA is a technical sport and those technical fighters like Couture always beat the big dumb one dimensional lugs. This fight is a travesty to MMA, a washed up WWE reject who for all his magical big strenght everybody hypes up and his amazing agility and reflexes was told he couldn't play professional football.

Randy Couture is one of the most technically profound fighters of all time and Brock Lesnar is just hyped up as being something he isn't. I mean come on guys lets face it if he was all we make him out to be as a physical specimen he would be playing major league ball and making hundreds of millions.

    The Natural vs the Reject.

Randy has beaten the odds since day one when he stopped a seemingly unbeatable Vitor Belfort. I do believe that Brock will end this fight early and very decisive. Randy uses his wrestling to set up everything he does and he's going up against a far superior wrestler. Randy is a great wrestler at 197lbs but Lesnar is a legitimate super heavyweight with more speed and skill than couture. I would love to see Randy step up one more time and defy the odds but I just don't see him doing it this time. Lesnar has been fighting for the last year and Randy has been making movies, dealing with contraversy and getting older. I hope that I am wrong but I just can't imagine any scenario that would make this fight go Couture's way or even make it close. With that being said "The Natural" is one of my hero's and I will always admire him for what he has accomplished.

Mike, let me give you a scenario in which Randy Couture pulls off the upset win over Lesnar...

Many fights that match wrestler vs wrestler end up becoming a stand up war because the wrestling skills offset. If that happens, there is no question that the advantage goes to Couture. His boxing skills (footwork, head movement, working angles, etc.) is much more advanced than Lesnar. There is no question that Lesnar would enjoy the advantage in power, but that would be it. The fight might look a lot like Anderson Silva vs ___________ (fill in the blank). No, I'm not saying Couture has the same skills as Silva in the stand up game, but simply making an analogy about the difference in striking skills.

There are other scenarios in which Couture could win. I could sit here typing for a while describing different situations that would swing the fight in Couture's favor. Quite frankly, I can only think of one scenario in which Lesnar will enjoy an advantage: Lesnar takes down Couture, and lays on top of him for the bulk of the fight.

All in all, I hope it's an exciting fight, and I can't wait!!!!

The closer it gets, the more distracted I become. I have my opinions about the fight, but I really hope Randy takes him out. It would make a huge statement to the matchmakers at the UFC. Time will tell though. Thanks for commenting guys. I think the stand up game is a wild card of sorts. It really is going to be suspensful until we get to hear Goldberg rattle of "and here weeee goooooo"

This has turned into a really good discussion and its good to see everyone
sharing different point of views without resorting to pety arguing and nonsense

Doug you make a good point as far as the stand up is concerned,
and in reality i believe 100% that this match is going to be exactly that:
    A Stand Up chess game
The odds of this turning into some Technical pin point Methodical battle are VERY LOW
due to the fact that even though Couture has incredible gameplans,
He relies Heavily on his Wrestling Ability to give him the edge which will now be
nullified due to Brocks equally impressive resume on the mat
Another thing to consider is the Explosiveness of Brock, he's soo overwhelming of a Heavyweight
that i dont think he's going to allow Couture to sit back and play
a technical freeze tag game with him, But on the flip side that leaves Brock
more open to making mistakes rushing in....

ahhh.. i can go on and on about this match up, lol
    I CANT WAIT FOR SATURDAY!

Todd, great article as always. Even if I don't agree with your pick, I've gotta respect the nerve it took to devote an entire article to it only days before the fight. That is sticking with the courage of your convictions for sure. As soon as it's over, every Tom, Dick and Harry will be running forward to say they knew it would go down that way, but not all of them have the nerve to do it now. Nor the skill, good metaphor. In the spirt of it (the metaphor), I'd just like to point out the size of Brock's brush...

I'm on the other side of the fence, but, as always, you've presented your case thoroughly and thoughtfully. Can't wait to see what happens.

I love the size of Brock brush comment bro, hilarious. And a great point. I just read so many folks saying no one was pushing Randy, everyone was picking Brock. I still am not sure who will win to be honest. I just know in my heart who I want to win and why he should. I figure, if Im wrong, so be it, like you said at least I had the gumption to go with my gut and not the odds on this one. Thats not a stab at the ones who are going for Brock, that truly is the smart bet. I like to play the devils advocate. I think it worked well here, and what if Im right. I better not count those chickens just yet, lest all my eggs get broken. Thanks for reading my man. Take care.

I really enjoy the fact that you have such a talent for getting people talking. I try to work that magic too with my topics.

One thing Ive learned so far, with certain topics of mainstream value, if you name your article right you get a ton of reads. My Kimbo-Shamrock article got over 2700 reads a few days before the fight. Four comments. I imagine the closer to fight night we get, the more Randy and Brock will get googled and I will get a ton of reads. I prefer comments to reads though. It lets me know I either got them thinking or heated enough to respond. There is more reward in that.

Im glad I could get some newbies on here commenting. Maybe with those strong opinins they might contribute an article. We will see.

I guess its easier to boast your opinion after the fight. I took a chance and I was wrong. Live and learn, at least I put my pick out there for everyone to see and critique. I though Randy was doing quite well until he got put down. Brocks stand up was far more impressive than i had anticipated. Wish you had commented before the fight, hope you didnt show up just to rub my nose in it. That would be mean.
