College Football Week 12: Early Lines and Point Spreads

Mitch WilsonSenior Writer INovember 9, 2008

Another week is in the books and another week where the time you got in on a game made the difference between a win, loss, and a push.

Tim Pollock from the Bleacher Report didn't seem to have a problem with it as he was the winner of my free picking contest; it starts new this week as Tim looks to be the first repeat winner.

You can always sign up and join right up until Saturday as a new contest starts every week but the earlier is always better as it gives you more time to sort through everything. It takes about 20 seconds to sign up and doesn't cost a thing.

While we know these won't be the lines for the contest as they will certainly move, it's always fun to see where the odds makers started things out.

On Tuesday, Ball State is -15 1/2 at Miami (OH). We'll hear all about the cradle of coaches but we will also hear about the Cardinals' quest for an undefeated season.

On Wednesday, Temple is -2 1/2 at Kent and Central Michigan is +3 at Northern Illinois. I think the CMU-NIU game may be one of the better games of the week.

On Thursday, Buffalo is +2 1/2 at Akron, Virgina Tech is +4 at Miami, and Wyoming is +8 1/2 at UNLV. Triple header on a Thursday night, nothing wrong with that.

On Friday, Cincinnati is -3 1/2 at Louisville. Cincinnati has a major bowl in its sights while Louisville is one of the most unpredictable teams out there.

As we move on to Saturday, Indiana is +34 1/2 at Penn State. The odds makers are looking for JoePa's crew to rebound well against the hapless Hoosiers.

Purdue is +14 1/2 over Iowa. Iowa will need to return to Earth and focus in a hurry after last week's big win.

Northwestern is +3 at Michigan. The Wolverines are looking to finish strong in what has been their worst season in decades.

Minnesota is +13 at Wisconsin. The Gophers seem to be folding while the Badgers have regained their footing.

Wake Forest is -4 at NC State. Both of these teams are coming off of nice wins.

Duke is +12 at Clemson. Clemson is looking to finish strong in what has been a turbulent season.

North Carolina is -2 1/2 at Maryland. The Tar Heels are a year early on most people's schedules.

Notre Dame is -3 at Navy. While Navy is the home team, this game is being played in Baltimore.

Connecticut is -10 at Syracuse.  The Orange look for anything positive to keep from this season.

Mississippi State is +20 1/2 at Alabama. The Tide have wrapped up a spot in the SEC Title Game, but they have bigger goals in mind.

Vandy is +4 1/2 at Kentucky. The Wildcats lost a heartbreaker against Georgia while Vandy was stomped by the Gators.

Texas A&M is +8 at Baylor. Robert Griffin is one of the most exciting players to watch in the country.

New Mexico is -1 at Colorado State. Both of these teams are playing for pride at this point.

Toledo is +16 at Western Michigan. Western proved in Week 11 that they can play with anyone.

Utah State is +13 1/2 at La. Tech. Utah State is one of the worst teams in the country.

East Carolina is +1 at Southern Mississippi. The Pirates are still looking to regain that early season magic.

UAB is + 4 1/2 at Tulane. Two more teams just playing it out until the end.

Texas is -14 at Kansas. The Longhorns still have a shot to be a major player when all is said and done.

Missouri is -26 1/2 at Iowa State. While the luster may be off of Mizzou a bit, they are still just a two-loss team.

Cal is +3 at Oregon State. There still playing for No. 2 bowl seeding in the Pac-10.

Arizona is + 31/2 at Oregon. One of the more intriguing match ups of the week.

UCLA is -7 1/2 at Washington. Both of these teams have had better days and will have better days ahead.

Georgia is -8 at Auburn. It's setting up to be a tough off season at Auburn.

BYU is -4 at Air Force. The air attack battles the ground attack out West.

South Carolina is +23 at Florida. The Gators own this series in a big way.
