Warriors News: Chris Webber Signs with Golden State

C-Webb is officially back.

The 1993 first overall draft pick is coming out of retirement, and signed with the Golden State Warriors Monday night.

The contract, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, will be worth about $570,000 over the remainder of the 2008 season.

Many fans seriously doubt the ability of a 34-year-old veteran to keep up with the pace of the modern game. While he doesn't deny it, Warriors coach Don Nelson is saying that Webber will help their game with his midrange shooting when the game slows down.

Don Nelson also insists that Webber is essential to the future success of the Golden State Warriors. According to ESPN, Nelson is quoted as saying:

"I'm afraid if we don't get him here [that] our team is not strong enough to be a playoff team...that's my biggest fear. I think if he comes it can benefit our team, it can benefit his and my relationship, it can benefit players on this team. I think he has a chance to make some of our players better and make our team better. Really that's all that's important. I'll get along with anybody who can help our team."

While Webber might not be all that vitally important to a possible playoff team, Nelson seems to think so.

When Webber was drafted by the Magic in 1993, he played under the same Don Nelson.

If Nelson's sour relationship with Webber back in 1993 is any indicator, Webber, or anybody else in the Bay Area, will not like this deal in the least.

However, with Nelson's above comments about the need of Webber on his team, things look like they may just work out in the end.

Watch out for these Golden State Warriors. They could be a force to be reckoned with in postseason play this season.

I think he's a good fit. He's a great passer and they could use someone of his stature in the front court.

I disagree Webber will not be able to fix the Warriors interior defense all by himself.

This would be a brilliant signing if not for the cracks Nelson made on their current team. It will be great as long as Webber steps in as a role player...coming in against teams that are keeping Golden State from their break neck pace where he can play 10 - 15 minutes, help some ball movement issues, and provide short breaks for Warriors big men. He won't be needed in every game...he probably should not even play in every game at this point in his career...but he can be a great help to them as a role player. Properly used he can be worth 3 - 5 regular season wins and help in the playoffs. Wrongly used...well, the Warriors were pretty fun to watch for a while, they might get back there...
