WWE Needs to Put an End to Their Gimmick Pay-Per-View Events

Marc QuarantaJun 4, 2018

The WWE went to full gimmick pay-per-views in 2009 and it needs to stop. These events have included Hell in a Cell, Elimination Chamber, Extreme Rules, T.L.C. and Breaking Point. Night of Champions could also be considered a gimmick because all the championships are on the line. But Night of Champions is good because it makes everything about gold, which is what it's all about in the business.

Are these events exciting? Yes. The audience knows what to get when it comes to these events, but they aren't as special as they were the first year they were introduced.

The only event that has any business of sticking around for future use is Elimination Chamber. And that is only if it continues to be used the way it is. This event is to determine the main events of WrestleMania. It has been used for No. 1 Contender matches for the main event, and also the championship matches, with the winner going to WrestleMania.

Extreme Rules doesn't do it, and it never has. It was good when it was originally ECW One Night Stand, and that was good for two years before it should have been canned. Extreme Rules is a terrible pay-per-view and needs to go. Hell in a Cell and T.L.C. need to go as well. They rid themselves of the Breaking Point (submission matches ppv) and need to throw the other ones out as well.

The reason that this is so bad for the WWE product is because it takes away the excitement of the feuds. For all the matches that happen in the main events of Summerslam, the audience knows "oh, these two are going to go at it next month in Hell in a Cell." And most matches don't have any decent storyline, but because it's a pay-per-view, they throw them in the cell.

This year's CM Punk and John Cena feud is the only feud that would deserve to be settled in the cell. And that is the perfect word. Settled. The Cell is where feuds were settled. A wins, then B wins, so let's settle it in a Cell. End it all in the most hellish match of all time.

Again, this is the most Hellish Match of All Time!!! So when two guys get in this match, they want to kill each other. They want to end the other's career, but it doesn't have that same intensity anymore because the guy doesn't want to inflict damage. He just wants to win the match.

Hell in a Cell never used to be about the title; sure, maybe it was a title match, but it was about hurting your opponent to the point he had to retire. That isn't the case anymore. Because when you finally get a feud where they want to end each other's career, you can't put them in this match because it is only allowed on one show, one night in the year.

Gimmick matches are supposed to be the end of storyline or to showcase specific talents of wrestlers. Putting wrestlers in a T.L.C match because it is that time of the year is just plain stupid.

T.L.C will never be what it used to be. It was a tag team match and thrived as a tag team match, but because tag team is a thing of the past, it will never be a terrific match. There have been a couple great ones with Edge/Taker and CM Punk/Hardy, but for the most part, they don't live up to the hype.

I understand it probably has a lot to do with the PG rating that they have going, but let's hope with recent events that the PG rating is not the only thing done. Get back to the regular schedule. Let's see some Backlash, Unforgiven, No Mercy, Armageddon!

Let's see those pay-per-views. But if the WWE doesn't wanna touch those and just start new, then start new events, new names, but no gimmicks. Get back to the wrestling, and pump some fuel into the story lines. Give the WWE fans what they deserve and get back to what made the business so popular.
