Just after signing a good cornerback in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed a great cornerback in Nnamdi Asomugha. Reportedly, Asomugha has signed a five-year, $60 million deal with $25 million guaranteed.
This acquisition is huge for the Eagles. Not only do they have Cromartie, but the addition of Asomugha makes their secondary a force to be reckoned with. With Mike Vick running the offense and Cromartie and Asomugha on defense, the Eagles are automatically a Super Bowl threat.
These new signings will hopefully allow DeSean Jackson to settle a contract with the Eagles and stay with the team. The Eagles still have receivers Jeremy Macklin, Jason Avant and Sinorice Moss, but if Jackson can get a deal done then it is very hard to believe that the Eagles won't make the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
Earlier reports were that the New York Jets or the Dallas Cowboys would be able to get Asomugha, but the Eagles had other ideas. The Eagles made their move just after the official free agency window opened and are making noise and everyone is going to take notice of what the Eagles have done.
Head coach Andy Reid had this to say about the new signing:
I think we all know about Nnamdi, he's one of the best, if not the best, cornerbacks in the National Football League. He'll be a great addition to our cornerback corps. Right now, we have three good cornerbacks…and we'll see how things go there.
