Carlos Tevez: Why Staying in Europe is the Best Move for Manchester City Striker

Vijay MuraliJun 4, 2018

Manchester City have completed the signing of Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid and it is a great addition for the club. The Argentina International is undoubtedly one of the world’s best players and can prove to be a quality addition for the next season.

It is also a statement of intent from the Manchester based club because they have secured the signature of a player who is coveted by many big clubs and have shown that they can establish themselves as one of the biggest clubs in the future.

The versatile Argentine striker is a great addition to City and it would be excellent for City if Carlos Tevez also does stay at the club. However, the Manchester City striker has been linked with a move away from Manchester City and there is every possibility that he will move to a different club by the end of the transfer window.

According to a report on the Mirror, Tevez has claimed that he wanted to be closer to his family, especially his two young daughters, and it is understandable because it is difficult being a footballer at times. Tevez is one of the top strikers in the world and at cash-rich Manchester City, he is certain to be financially comfortable.

However, he is the only one who will understand whatever his emotions are and he has to make the right decision for his family and his professional career.

Tevez has been linked with some clubs in the past and Brazilian club Corinthians were very interested in signing the striker before the move fell  through. Staying in Brazil would mean that he would have been much closer to his family and that would have suited him, but he has a contract with Manchester City and the clubs were not able to strike a deal.

According to tribalfootball.com, Manchester City had apparently been prepared to let him go on a lesser price to the Brazilian club because it would mean that Tevez would not be playing for any of their rivals in Europe, considering that City’s project involves doing well in Europe as well. City have been very ambitious in the last two years and Roberto Mancini has done an excellent job in taking Manchester City to third place and also winning the FA Cup in the last season.

Tevez was integral to City’s success as he scored 20 goals in the last season and was the top scorer in the Premiership along with Dimitar Berbatov. Since his controversial move from Manchester United, he has been pivotal in City’s progress and has enjoyed being the main man for his club.

Though there have often been rumors in the past regarding his future, he has been excellent in his game and no one can deny his efforts to help City become one of the top clubs in the league.

The Argentina international is arguably in the best form of his career, having been prolific since his move to Manchester City. If he stays in Europe, he could compete in the Champions League again. Manchester United was beaten against Barcelona in the 2008-09 final, and that was his last game for Manchester United and so far, his last game in the Champions League because he joined the ambitious rivals of his former club.

Tevez has shown his commitment to the club, which can be seen in the way in which he worked very hard in the FA Cup final despite just recovering from an injury. Mancini made Tevez the captain of Manchester City because he could inspire his team mates to put in their best efforts, which was important in securing hard-fought victories.

It is certain that Manchester City would like to hold on to him, but considering he is determined to be closer to his family, City might allow the striker to leave the striker.

According to the Mirror, Inter Milan are interested in the striker and could make a formal approach for him in the future. However, it could also be a loan deal for the striker as the Italian club look to win the Serie A title back from rivals AC Milan. Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti was not impressed by the last season and has sacked two managers, Rafael Benitez and Leonardo.

Tevez was pictured along with Inter Milan director Marco Branca, which further fuelled speculation regarding his move to Inter Milan. For the striker, a move to Inter Milan would suit him better than most other clubs because he can play alongside many other Argentine players like Cambiasso, Javier Zanetti and Diego Milito. There are more South American footballers in Italy and Spain than in England and it could actually help him.

According to this report, Real Madrid are also interested in acquiring the services of Tevez in the summer. Tevez will cost around £50 million and with City in no compulsion to sell the striker, they will hold out for a high valuation of their prized asset. It is questionable whether Manchester City need another striker because having completed the signing of Aguero, they have excellent forwards in their squad like Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko.

It is also uncertain if Real Madrid will pay such a high fee to acquire Tevez, especially when they have Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain in their squad. For Tevez though, Real Madrid will be a good destination for his professional career because the Argentina International can play alongside some of the best players in the world and it presents a great opportunity to win trophies.

Though it is difficult to find a club which can match City’s valuation of the striker, his agent Kia Joorabchian is confident of finding a new club, according to the Guardian. It is understandable that Tevez wants to be closer to his family, but at the age of 27 he is at the peak of his career where he can continue to play at the highest level and also in the Champions League.

Also, Argentina is a country which is blessed with some of the best strikers in the world and if Tevez does not play in a top European club, he might lose his competitive edge and could possibly affect his chances in the national team, which he undoubtedly represents with a lot of pride. For an ambitious player like Tevez, winning trophies is extremely important and the Champions League will certainly be on his mind though he has won it in the past.

Though he wants to be closer to his family, he must also consider his professional career and it is better for him as a footballer to stay in Europe.

However, if he faces personal issues in Manchester, he could adjust better in Italy where there are a number of his countrymen playing in the Italian league. It is a hard decision to make for Tevez and if he decides to move out of Europe, then the Champions League would be devoid of one of the best talents who deserve to fight for the prestigious title.
